Problem burning DVD from iMovieHD on 500 GB LaCie

I'm a newbie both to this list and to using iMovie HD. I imported a little over 60 min. of video onto my 500 GB Lacie drive because I knew I didn't have enough space left on my G5. I edited the footage and am now ready to burn a DVD. The file is 17.65 GB. I've tried saving as a QT movie in full quality, and also directly to iDVD, but keep getting error messages. When I attempted to go directly into iDVD, I got error message, "The movie could not be sent to iDVD because of an unknown error. Please make sure that iDVD is properly installed, that your project disk has write permission, and that you have enough space. (Error 1309. Help! What must I do?

Lacie drives come formated for a PC. (Your Mac can read and write FAT but it is not ideal). Use the disk utility to reformat the drive "Mac OS extended"
