i currently have a regular airport network in my home, running 4 computers. i plan on purchasing a new 12" PB, but im afraid that the the new airport extreme card that it uses will not be compatible with my current base station. Is this the case? having to buy another base station would not be enjoyable.
Thanks
Brian

Hi
Former base stations only support 802.11b, not the new 802.11g (Airport Extreme). You could always just use your original base station and continue using 802.11b since the new cards support b or g. It is longer distance anyway.

AirPort and Extreme are fully backwards-compatible. I have a fortune invested in a high-power, fully amplified (1-mile range) AirPort network, which I use solely for accessing a DSL connection that tops out at 1000kbps. I have no reason to upgrade to AirPort Extreme, as I am WELL within the bandwidth limit of old-style airport. Also, the new AirPort will not offer me any advantages. So, I'l going to use the AirPort Extreme card in my new 17" powerbook, but it will work fine with my oldstyle network.

1-mile???!?!? That's pretty cool.... fully amplified (1-mile range) AirPort network...
BTW, I noticed that you're from Geneva. I just got back from a trip to Europe. Geneva was one of my favorite stops. And the weather was nicer than I expected (early-October).
