Apple Mail woes

I can't send mail with apple mail. I get an error that says ' unable to append mail to outbox'
I've repaired permissions and keychains. Tossed the mail plist and made a new .Mac account within mail and have yet to be able to send mail from my G4. I can't send with my .Mac address or with the one provided by my ISP.
Funny part is that I can send mail using my iBook and all the settings are identical.

compare the smtp settings of the ibook to the G4

check the sharing settings, make sure that the firewall isn't blocking you.
