"I seldom see any advertisements from competitors resorting to school yard snipping or petty pandering to draw attention to their products."
I assume from the above that you're refering only to the tech field (ostensibly Apple/MS) since comparison advertising in negative fashion has been a staple for a very long time (just look at Quiznos' current ads). MS sends their ads out in the manner of interviews and announcements that they know will be picked up by newsreaders in the tech world. For instance here is one from today's article on MS and Vista:
"'By our math, we eclipsed the entire install base of Apple in the first five weeks of shipment,' Kevin Turner, Microsofts COO, said at the companys annual financial analysts meeting."
Seems rather petty to me but YMMV.

I'm an Apple Specialist, I'm around Macs every day, 9 hours a day. I'm familiar with the sales methodology and systems. We also have a service center with a nice assortment of malfunctioning Macs. I can assure you if I were on a competitors advertising consulting team there would be plenty of fodder for a school yard brawl.

You have all the ear markings of a true Apple Cultist then.

One of the things I find disappointing, if not just saddening about Apple Fanatics or in most cases the Apple Core Cultist (no pun intended) is their giddy juvenile attitudes and need to leverage their Appletude at the expense of competitors. Apple has its flaws, however I seldom see any advertisements from competitors resorting to school yard snipping or petty pandering to draw attention to their products.

Does it matter or change the facts about what I said?

Staying on the subject yes, it would be more about MS and Apple versus franchise restaurants. I also wanted to make a point about how elitist some Apple Fans are too.

By our math, we eclipsed the entire install base of Apple in the first five weeks of shipment, Kevin Turner, Microsofts COO, said at the companys annual financial analysts meeting.
If that was as significant as they would like people to believe, then why do they need to ask investors for patience while they pursue their various market "models"?
If they are earning so much money, why isn't their stock doing better? It dropped almost 2% the day after this earnings announcement.
Conventional wisdom would have it that Microsoft is wise to diversify their product line; however, while doing so they resemble nothing so much as a suffocating, floundering fish out of water. A big fish, yes, but a dying one just the same.
As for Microsoft people taking pot shots at Apple, they have no doubt been feeling the sting of those Mac/PC Guy ads. Since Microsoft is so often the target of Mac advertising zingers, taking umbrage because they send a few Apple's way seems silly to me. Sauce for the goose, as they say.
Why do Mac fans get so testy when Microsoft hypes their own products? Of course they will insist that it's only a matter of time before their ongoing failures turn into success. What else can they say?
What's interesting to me is that Microsoft execs appear to think all they need to do is hire more people to improve their product line. It obviously escapes them that it's what you do with the people you've got that really matters. If company leadership lacks vision, imagination and insight, all the talented workers in the world aren't going to pull their chestnuts out of the fire. Apparently Microsoft investors, or ex-investors, realize this even if the brass hats at the top do not. Hence the limp stock performance over the last year.
