My biggest issue is I want it to do what my Palm has been doing for like the last 10 years. Catagories for the cal, search all of the iphone, take notes, and store documents. Heck, it's already there in the corresponding OS X app.
Also, I say the note on foreign languages. Is there any US Smart Phone that allows that?

More importantly, everybody who asks for 3G forgets a patent fight over key technology is currently being fought out in the courts. Currently, there is an injunction in effect regarding some of this technology. Could you imagine if Apple had selected a Qualcomm 3G chip for the iPhone? If it had, it probably couldn't ship iPhones into the Country right now. With these right up in the air, I hardly find it responsible to select 3G technology until these issues are settled. Last thing Apple needs is another 100 million dollar pay out to somebody.
I trust Apple's judgement. It didn't include 3G because the time wasn't right.
Like the story says, "A few of our iPhone desires are admittedly out of reach for the current model, as they would require changes to the iPhones actual hardware."
And Wi-Fi is most definitely not "just about everywhere." At least, not open and accessible Wi-Fi...

[Those of us in the 160+ and growing number of communities where AT&T offers 3G might disagree that we could'nt care less about 3G. I think the MacWorld list is actually a pretty good one, and likely realistic in the next version, as a lot of it could be done with software (and might well be coming in the current version). Only 3G and GPS require hardware changes. As for patents, Apple could avoid it by going with Broadcom or TI (which most GSM manufacturers like Nokia and SE have done).
Actually, GPS should NOT be a hardware change. All current phones are required by FCC rules to be able to pinpoint a caller's location to within some distance for 911 calls. As such, modern phones have a psuedo-GPS capability built-in at a minimum, if not an out right GPS receiver. My Treo 650 has that ability. I have it specifically turned off (except for 911/emergency stuff...you cannot turn it off for that)...I don't want "Big Brother" tracking my movements.
And even if you ignore that, you can easily add GPS capability by way of Bluetooth. When I want GPS capability with my Treo, I use a Tom Tom Bluetooth GPS receiver with Tom Tom GPS software/maps. Works great. No additional hardware needed in the phone. Of course, it does require the ability to use third-party applicaitons...thus, one reason why there is no iPhone in my future right now. I like my GPS, Slingplayer, and other third party appications MUCH to MUCH...even if I don't use them all the time. Not to mention the ability to use it as a modem when I need it, user replaceable/accessable battery, voice dialing, etc.

I suspect open and accessible Wi-Fi is available in most, if not all, of those major cities that support 3G. I do not even live in a big city, and I can find it everywhere. As such, is it really that much of an issue for most people? Moreover, engineering is about striking a balance for what works for most people.

(Old pre injunction article, but it gives you an idea of the complexity of the issues).
I will also say that Nokia made a statement that the whole patent mess will likely slow down the adoption of 3G.
http://news.zdnet.com/2100-103522-6187145.html
Just a few days ago there was a story that Verizon is paying Broadcomm six dollars a phone to avoid the injunction, even though the effected phones use Qualcomm chips and the patent issues are not yet resolved.
Blackberry not too long ago was almost put out of business over a patent issue. Apple recently had to pay Creative 100 million bucks. You cannot blame Apple for adopting the safe technology.
My point is this: there are reasons other then battery life that Apple had on its mind when it chose not to adopt 3G out of the starting gate. Apple is doing what any company would do in such a situation, namely point out the user related benefits of the Edge: namely battery life. Marketing the patents issues will not sell phones.
I only bring up the patent issue because people when talking about the iphone's lack of 3G talk about it as if it were an extreme oversight by Apple, when in fact, it was a carefully thought out and reasonable decision.

1. Signal fluctuating from 4 - 5 bars to one bar or less while sitting in the exact location. When this happens while on a call, this normally results in the call being dropped. I am hoping that this is just an AT&T network issue but another Sony Ericsson phone on the same AT&T network in the same location experiences no such issue. This happened to both my first iPhone and its replacement.
2. Unusable speakerphone for voice calls. As it is now, the speakerphone volume is just way too low to allow conversation in any environment other than a quiet one.
In my weeks with my iPhone, i love using Safari to browse the internet and also the seamless integration of Google Map with Address Book and Safari. Unfortunately, i had to return my iPhone because of the dropped calls issue. iPhone, is afterall, a phone. If it can't perform that function consistently, it's difficult for me to justify having it as a phone. I would love to give iPhone another shot if the dropped calls issue is resolved.

If the iPhone had PTT (Push To Talk) I would be an instant owner !
If my iPhone had Push to Talk I think I might drop it in a blender like that guy in the YouTube video. Push to Talk is a pox upon the land. You're already subjecting us to half of your conversation -- don't force us to hear the other half too! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I don't give a crap what your favorite song or jingle is, I really don't want to hear it. And it's inevitable that some day you're going to forget to turn off your cell phone in some event, or it's going to ring in some public place and you're going to piss people off with your ringtone.
Don't do it Apple! Don't do it!

a fix suggests something is broken whereas many of your suggestions are merely feature requests
That's a fair point, although I think the introduction and text of the article make it clear that we were talking about a combination of feature requests and "fixes."
I will also say that most people could care less about 3G because most people do not use it as it is. Wi-Fi is just about everywhere, and it faster.
Based on my experiences, and those of friends and family who also have iPhones, I have to disagree with that one. About the only time I use WiFi is when I'm at home; most of the WiFi networks I encounter are closed. So I spend a lot of time on the EDGE network.

Something I'm a bit surprised the editors didn't add to the list was a better camera (with a flash, autofocus, stabilization, and perhaps a boost to 3.2MP or even 5MP with the US 3G Sony Ericsson K850i coming soon). Perhaps the editors aren't as interested in using a phone as a camera (and perhaps I've been spoiled by SE and Nokia's attention to this feature), but I wouldn't be surprised if iPhone 2.0 gets a camera upgrade as well.
I was surprised, too. If you check out the first installment of our discussion of the full list, you'll see that I was the only editor to vote for that /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
