Apple updates iMac offerings

Do the 20" iMacs use the horrible TN matrix displays? Can someone confirm this? I see the viewing angle specs are 160 degrees, which leads me to believe so. TN displays are beyond awful for doing any type of graphics work. They suffer from an unacceptable straight-on viewing angle and color consistency. For example, a solid color desktop looks like a gradient. NO exaggeration! It seems all these companies are going the TN route because they're dirt cheap with faster response times compared to an S-IPS matrix which Apple currently uses in their Cinema Displays. Even the old 20" iMac has a better viewing angle with 170 degrees.

Actually, if you read the specs, the HD series of chips have onboard HD decoding where the x1600 does not, also the x1600 pro isn't DX10 compatable where the HD2400 and HD2600 are. Also, if you read the latest press about the ATI offering, it is actually better than the 8600 GT in the area of HD.
To say it is inferior is a little extreme....
Equal to the 8600 would be fair, maybe not as good for gaming, but better for HD content etc.
As far as Blu Ray goes, I don't want an internal Blu Ray drive if I have to give up the superdrive. Blu Ray is still too expensive and if I want one, i can get an External one to use IMHO....

Did I at any point in my post say they were inferior? I asked if the Old Imac cards were better and went on to say that the MBP cards were pretty nice from my handling.. I also said that the reviews and test results weren't great. I dont go by what some stranger who is used to a thousand dollar computer systems says. Im still running on a Mac Mini 1.25 Ghz G4. Anything in the graphics department is an improvement from that.
I do agree with you on the Blu ray however. Full size Blu Rays are still $550. Thats the cheapest I've seen at least. I cant imagine what a slot loading BR drive would cost..

Well, considering that this version is even thinner than the last I'd guess that if anything they'll be harder to service.

Although Jobs did say something about one screw and you can add your own Ram. Since I never did a ram upgrade in the old form factor, I don't know if it's easier or not.
I'm guessing everything else would be a nightmare to do.

That was why I thought we weren't seeing them in machines yet. Sheesh, a Blu-Ray drive is worth half the cost of an entire iMac.

I bought my iMac last October with 2Gb ram, 500Gb HD and 256Mb video. Too often Apple invokes "buyer's regret" in people when they realize they could have gotten much more if they had just waited. These announcements, thankfully, don't give me that feeling. These are nice upgrades, but not so much that I feel I should have waited until now to buy.

Sorry Big L, the inferior comment came from Jarmo's information, you were the link i replied to in error as I was reading your post. My bad. I was just trying to get more updated information on the cards posted because it looks like the prior article was tested with the original drivers and those were terrible. ATI introduced new drivers that made the cards go from lemons to real performers in the low to midrange cost cards.

the new iMacs will still NOT have a SATA port (or an eSATA port, to be technically correct) - am I right?
For eSATA, I will still need a full-fledged Mac desktop, yes?
so on that note: does anyone have a clue as to when Apple is going to announce a new line of regular Mac Pro desktops?
Does anyone have a guess? I'm all ears!

After seeing images on the new iMac on Apple's site, I have to wonder why they have that big black border around the display? That just looks weird. Almost as if they are trying to deceive you into thinking the screen is bigger than it actually is.

All the new HD TVs and Plasmas are going with that black shiny bezel. I was just shopping for an HD TV and decided against the plasmas with the shiny black bezel because it is way too distracting. Instead I choose one of the end of year models with a dull aluminum bezels. I cannot believe how severely Apple followed on this product and did not lead at all. Very disappointing.

LOL.
I thought that the design team was going to go for a more minimalist by reducing the size of the bezel. Instead they went and called more attention to it by adding the trimming and the black - ARGH - Apple logo, evidently in an attempt to mirror the look of the iPhone. Personally I prefer the more understated design of the previous version.
