One thing Word has going for it that is not in Pages is full integration with reference/bibliography manager programs like Endnote. This is important to us academic types. Keynote has made amazing inroads in the science/academic community, because one can put together a sharp talk without dealing with the bloat that is ppt. I doubt Pages will do the same without integration with reference/bibliography managers.

You can use EndNote with Pages. You can simply hold down the option key while dragging and dropping the reference from the EndNote library into Pages. It may not conform perfectly to the export style specified, but the text formatting will be correct. (Journal names will be in Italic, etc.) Cannot use Cite While You Write with Pages. Thus, not perfect intergration, but it can be used.
What I continue to miss is the inability to make error bars on charts created in the spreadsheet app. I have to create the chart in Excel and copy/paste.

Will it correctly build the biblio, or do I still need to run it through Word?

(I assume it is a Universal app and not Intel only).
Requirements are listed as a G4/500 with 10.4.10 or later.
Mostly I was waiting for Numbers. I've already got good standalone alternatives to the paint and DB modules, and almost never use draw.

Just bought it... seems really slow, it's not scriptable (according to script editor), imports are not as complete as I had hoped. I admit, I haven't spent much time with it, but at this point I am not impressed.

I downloaded the trial version of iWork 08 and was very disappointed to discover that Apple did not fix the bug that does not allow editing right-to-left text (Hebrew and Arabic, for example). I really cannot understand the logic behind this omission. One day work by a talented programmer could have opened a huge market for Apple.

Agreed 100%. I use Pages like I would have used MS Publisher back in my Windows days.

I'd love to use Pages for day to day work but won't unless it integrates with a bibliography package. Sure, I can use kludgey solutions like export to RTF and scanning for in-text citations, but yuck.
I don't hate Endnote/Word enough to go to that kind of trouble. And I'd rather not learn how to use a handful of word processors - I just don't have the time. So I'll use Word for work (academic) stuff and Pages when I need to make a flyer or newsletter or something.

I know Pages isn't as full-featured as Word or Nisus--but how would it compare to something like Mariner Write or AppleWorks? Has it finally moved into a mid-level word processor with this change? I ask because I've never used it and thought it was strictly page layout.
I prefer Keynote to PowerPoint and use only the most basic functions in Excel which I think would be available in Numbers, so I'm rather interested in the new iWork, but only if Pages really does have some power behind it to handle longer documents.

The best Endnote work-around I found is to copy/paste references into your Pages file from endnote; it will be bracketed as with using CWYW. Export the Pages file as an RTF document. Then you can format the file directly in Endnote. The bibliography formats correctly, and you can tweak the formats and reapply.

This may sound like damning praise, but it handled my wonky template import the best of any WP processor. The only major issue was the text box borders. It even showed the Visio diagrams OK.
I opened the template I'm using for my Tech Writing Class and that imported with the same text border issues. I'm not 100% how the section breaks came in, though.
The MLA template for my research paper came in ok as well.
No style information was imported, though.
You can do word counts for just a section as well
I doubt I'd use it for my day job stuff--I REALLY need full Word compatibility for that.

iWork is definitely improving and I hope to get my hands on a copy soon. It really is starting to look like a viable replacement for Office, finally! However, I'd eventually like to see a database program included in the suite (called "Data"?, or would that alienate too many Star Trek fans?). It should be able to read both Access and Filemaker formats. This would be a killer suite and as long as the various programs can import and export Office documents in their native formats, why would anyone buy Office at nearly 3 times the price? Way to go Apple!

What about Right to left support for Hebrew and Arbic?
Apple, please, do not ignore this market, it can become very stong if you just add few more development hours.
not to speak of the iPod/iPhone which doesnt support hebrew nor every other Apple application.
Shmil.

Following is the feedback I sent to Apple about iWork '08. Perhaps I will get past being annoyed about this stuff and eventually see how the software works, garbage and all.
---------------------------------------------------------------
OK, I'm trying out the new iWork '08. Let me tell you about a few things that really STINK right off the bat.
I AM SICK AND TIRED OF SOFTWARE PUBLISHERS ASSUMING ALL USERS ARE MORONS.
1) iWork polluted my system with dozens of fonts I AM NOT INTERESTED IN. Why can't you have an option in the installation routine which allows the user to decline to install these fonts. I am not happy about having to remove all this garbage -- particularly just for the trouble of trying out a new app.
2) Likewise, iWork polluted my system with a whole bunch of foreign language .lproj files I have no interest in. Again, why not something in the install routine to decline non-English .lproj's. I can't believe something like this is beyond the capabilities of your programming staff.
3) I cannot find where the template files reside. I can't find them in the Library folder, nor can I even find them inside the application's package contents. Why do you ASSUME that all users want these templates. We should have an easy and transparent way to delete them.
Frankly I find your philosophy of throwing the kitchen sink into all of your apps, and not giving the user the option to decline to install components he or she contemplates no use for to be idiotic, insulting, and offensive.
