Pure space / disk access to 'iDisk' is generally done through the Finder. You can share files by putting it in you public subfolder.
Other applications will post/publish files to .mac as well.
As far as I know there is no FTP to .mac.

what ftp client can you use to access .mac storage?
Is this free? I mean software to take advantage of .mac storage?

You don't need any ftp, you just use your iDisk. You can put a web site created with a third party application to be hosted by .mac. In your iDisk, just drop your files in the Sites folder and bam, they are online.
As an example, the URL posted in my sig is my website and was created in Claris Home Page on a MacOS 9 machine.

.Mac doesn't need FTP because when you mount it, it looks like another disk. Just drag your files to or from it.
