I've used Excel for over 22 years now & SuperCalc before that. Since Excel could do so much more that SuperCalc the change was much easier.

How can you be using Excel for 22 years, when it was first introduced not until 1987 (as far as I know...)

Excel for Windows was introduced in 1987, but Excel was not originally released on the Windows platform. In 1985, Excel was released for a computer platform known as the Macintosh.

Now, I understand that Numbers needs it own format to accommodate things it does that Excel cannot do, but I'd like an easier path to convert to Excel and email.

Sounds like an easy AppleScript/Automator script would fix the problem.

Except that Numbers isn't scriptable...

Numbers has no "Send to..." command to email my simple sheet.

If conversion weren't an issue (I know, it is...) you could just drag the proxy icon in the title bar to the mail icon in the dock. Voila... new mail message with spreadsheet as attachment.
Problem is, it's not an Excel file.

Anyone seeing that Numbers is DOG slow?
Scrolling is slooow and choppy on a 2256 row spreadsheet. Adding a row takes about 5 seconds.
I tested it against Excel and MarinerCalc and both are SIGNIFICANTLY faster. Haven't compared the intergrated suites yet.

I noticed two things from Excel I miss in Numbers. The first is smart sorting. Excel can identify if I have a bunch of header rows and exclude them from a column sort. The only way I figured to do that in Numbers is to preselect the numbers I want sorted. Is there another way?
More importantly Numbers appears not to have a "freeze panes" function like Excel, which I find indispensable for any spreadsheet larger than the screen you are using.

"One big thing missing from Numbers is the ability to rotate text. It an obvious feature that should be in there for a spreadsheet that's focus is style over substance. For that matter, you can't rotate images or objects either."
Create a text box. Hold Command. Click and hold on either 'box' at each end of the text. Rotate text at will.
Images and objects: Select object. Hold Command. Click and hold on any box that defines a drag point for the object. Rotate at will.
So much for style over substance.
Numbers is hardly a "throwaway" app; it's much more polished and refined than other competitors (OpenOffice), even if it is missing some features. Pages 1.0 was much the same way, and I must say, it's evolved into a very decent app. Numbers 1.0 is a much better app than was Pages 1.0.

Instead of criticizing the program because it's not an Excel clone why not try building a few sheets to see if it can do the job on its own with its own features?

I agree, although I do believe Apple should have included AppleScript support or at least automator actions. A data calculation app should have some form of automation.

I believe what you're supposed to do is create a "Headers" table area, and then use that to fill in your data. The first row and first column will then be excluded from sorting.

Speaking of Applescript/Automator, could you recommend any books or DVDs (preferred) for stupid people like me to learn how to do Applescript or use Automator. I tried automator, but it was a bit confusing for me.
Thanks!

The stated reason for dropping VBA is that it was "too difficult" to do.

I am sure that to move VBA to the Cocoa environment would be very difficult and resource intensive (e.g. cost lots of money to accomplish). I think that Microsoft by stating that it is "too difficult" they really are saying that they do not want to commit the resources and money to move VBA to Cocoa on Intel. So they have made a decision to use the Apple native AppleScript and Automator in Office 2008.
In reality nothing should be "too difficult" for a company with the resources of Microsoft, it is not so much a matter of difficulty but of will and future strategy.

Thanks. It's a bit of a workaround but using two tables in the same sheet allows me to do what I want. Now I only need a "freeze panes" function and I can transfer 80% of my spreadsheets to Numbers! I do some heavy finance stuff so I don't think I can transfer all.

During his demo, Steve made it look very easy to do a print preview and scale the output so it fits on the pages you want it to. I haven't used Numbers myself, so I don't know if it goes beyond that at all (like allowing you to reposition elements independantly in print preview mode).

I've been thinking about using mind mapping to help teach chemistry, but for some reason I cannot seem to get my head around to making the software work for me in a way that does not seem more work than a pen and paper.
Does anyone have links to a site that could help with this? I've seen some mind mapping applications, but what are most people using?
Thanks,
Paul

I'm quite looking forward to giving it a try. I hardly ever use Excel because I can never figure out what I want to do with it, but the idea that I can put a graph and table on one sheet and have the graph dynamically update as I change numbers with a slider seems ideal for teaching purposes. For example, I could use the ideal gas law (PV=nRT), or kinetic data, and show how results vary with different parameters.
I hope it will be able to handle most of these things. I guess I will find out tomorrow.
