While I grudgingly admit that Quark has finally (finally!!!!! started to pay attention to their customer base and have made some better decisions in the last 6-12 months, I'm afraid that it might just be too late. Adobe has not only stolen Quark's lunch but is also eating it in at the assembly in front of the entire school. And here's why:
People hold grudges. Period. And when those people who generally make decisions about software purchases are the same people Quark has been abusing for more than a decade, it's not going to be a pretty scene.

I appreciate Quark taking initiative to help its customers, but it's now 4 years too late for me. I switched to InDesign after having used Quark exclusively for 13 years. Quark's support was abysmal and their software updates were years in arriving. For example it took almost 5 years for Quark to upgrade from version 4 to version 5. Quark then concentrated on making the print page layout program into a web design program, which I believe few users were interested in, rather than improving the page layout capabilities that users had been screaming for for years.
Adobe came on the scene with InDesign 1.0 which was barely useable, then 1.5 which was a little better, but when 2.0 came around I jumped ship from Quark to InDesign and have never looked back. Quark has a LONG history of paying absolutely no discernable attention to its userbase. They were the only game in town for over 15 years. They failed to recognize that users loved the program for its print design features and didn't care if it had web design features. The failed to recognize and support what made them famous and the features and screen display quality languished.
Even the latest version of Quark lags far behind InDesign, especially in PDF creation and general ease of use, and responsiveness. Quark has a legacy of ill will that will be tough to get beyond unless they concentrate on making the program fast, easier to use, and support simple, seamless Adobe PDF functionality that is at least as good as InDesign.
