I have Tiger on two DVDs from my intel iMac, and want to upgrade my old G4 iMac, which does not have a DVD player. I've tried hooking up my laptop by Firewire as a target disk and loading the DVD from there, and I've tried creating a Firewire network between the two Macs. With the first method, the DVD tries to upgrade the iMac, and instigates a restart, but when the iMac restarts, it immediately drops into a kernel panic. With the network method, I'm simply told I can't use the DVD. I can't copy the DVD by dragging, and I tried to create a disk image with Toast, but it wouldn't function. I really need to upgrade the old iMac; please help!

The first problem is that it sounds like you're aiming to violate the EULA.
The second problem is that EULA aside the media that ship with machines will almost never install a functional OS on any model other than that with which they came.
If you really need to upgrade the iMac a retail package of 10.4 should be installable by the target-disk-mode mechanism you've already tried for the bundled media.

Here are three reasons why you're having a problem.
1) The intel Version of Tiger will not work on a Power PC.
2) The DVD that came with the Intel Mac is machine specific. Even if both Macs were intel, the installation still won't work.
3) According to the EULA, what you're trying to do is also illegal.
Solution:
Buy a the retail version of Tiger (new or used).

My father is having a similar problem with his G3 Imac. He bought a retail 5 pack of Tiger from Apple. I believe he hooked up an external DVD drive via firewire and used OWC's Ex Post Facto to install the DVD. However he seems to still be having problems and we think its linked to Expost Facto..
Is it possible to install Tiger on a G3 without Ex Post Facto?

Thanks for the responses. I didn't realize this was illegal! Normally I don't buy have to buy an OS upgrade; I buy a new computer every 30 months. This time I kept the old computer around. Didn't realize that the OS discs now come only in a machine-specific format, or that it was illegal to upgrade another Mac that you owned! I still had the idea that most licenses allowed users to upgrade up to three personally-owned machines. As a Mac user since 1984, I still remember the days when OS was free . . .

Me too, but upgrades have been not-free now for more than twice as long as they were free and the machine-specific nature of bundled OS releases dates back to the 6.0.x era.
Truthfully, most people once they've bought a retail distribution of the OS ignore the license terms. The realistic odds that any single person will be caught at this are near-zero. So, ultimately, do what you're comfortable with. I try to abide by license terms and encourage others to do the same, but there's nothing forcing you outside your own conscience.

Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.
Legalities aside, you have no choice but to buy the retail version of Tiger. Even if you could use your discs, the intel version of Tiger will not intall on on a PowerPC.
If you really want to upgrade your OS, check out eBay/Craigslist for a used copy of Tiger. Note that the retail version of tiger has a black label. Do NOT get the discs with a grey label. The grey discs are machine specific and will be useless to you.
Another solution is to wait for leopard. Leopard works on both Intel and PowerPC. Get the family pack and you could upgrade both your Macs legally.

There are (or were) CD install versions of 10.4. I have one. It's a family pack version. I seem to remember that I got it (Tiger) on CD by clicking on a link at the online Apple Store. I don't have it available to look at right now, but I think it was a 10.4.2 install. Maybe you can find one on eBay.

Here is an order form to get Tiger CDs...it looks, however, as if this option ended in March of this year (2007). You might try calling Apple to see if it is still an option.
