It will be interesting to see John McLaughlin's software allows you to update the iPhone without the unlock switching back.

The reports on Hotz' hack say that you have to crack the case and solder things. No thanks.

I thought the moral was "whatever"
Don't get it if you don't like it. Hack it if you want to. Wait to see what v2 brings. Buy the competition's offerings. Do nothing. Take a nap.
I especially like the last one.

Unless you need to travel to Europe or something, I would wait. I expect that a free version of this software is right around the corner. Most iPhone users in the US have already signed up for AT&T so there is little need for this software right now. In the future, when 2 year contracts are up or if you are traveling internationally then this software will be very valuable.

Noteworthy is the fact that CRICKET, unlimited minutes for a flat rate can be used with the unlocked phone. They use the SIM card as well.
This alone i worth it for me to eat the $200 ATT termination fee.
The only way apple is going to be able to combat this is to make the phone not available without a contract purchase. right now I can go to ATT, or even an apple store, but a phone, and when i get this software, use it with Cricket!
woooooooohoooo!
Good bye $300 per month phone bills!

Good luck with that, looks like Cricket is CDMA, not GSM, so unless you're planning on wedging a CDMA radio into an iPhone with some duct tape and a soldering iron, it is not going to work! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I thought that many of the iPhone functions depend upon servers and software deployed specifically in the AT&T network. What's the point of crippling the iPhone?
It is tight integration in all things Apple that provides with the user experience we love.

Honestly, I don't think Apple cares that the phone is hacked, they still sell the phone don't they? As a matter of fact, this should sell more phones, right? AT&T is the one who should care.

Rumour has it that Apple gets 10% of what you burn on your subscription. So Apple will probably care.

Who thinks that ISPs could make much more money if they didn't extort customers. In the first half of the last century, electricity companies in New York were forced to sell electricity at lower prices. They resisted heavily. After the legal change, they made more money, because more people could afford electricity (Source: Book by Robert A. Caro on Lyndon Johnson). I think we have the same situation here. If bytes are expensive, you watch your consumption (or, like me, don't consume at all). If they are cheap, you'll use as many of them as pleases you, even if it costs a bit more.

The only three reasons I have not bought an iPhone are 1) I hate ATT, 2) the iPhone is a revision 1 product, and 3) price. This solution solves my first issue. I suspect an iPhone revision will occur around January, thus solving my second two issues. I would also consider buying a refurbished product.
I am a big pay as you go guy, and besides being a generally evil company, ATT's pay as you go options suck. If people report success with the software unlock, I will sign up for T-Mobile's pay as you go.

Will this work with Verizon? Since they don't use SIM cards, that could be an issue. I also would like to see what the next release of the phone brings (and hope we don't have to wait a year for the update, like we do with iPods).
Apple should have been more reasonable and made it so that more providors would pick up the phone. Having what Apple required as part of the deal forced the rest of the cell phone carriers to tell them where to shove the phone.
Also, like many people, I need more than a few GB of usable storage for my music. Even the 8GB model won't have enough for me. Of course, the 30GB iPod IS large enough, so it's not like I'm talking about that much space here (At least 10GB of usable space could be enough).
