I say "Welcome all ye unlockers!". The more, the merrier. If a million people want to unlock iPhones to use with their favorite non-AT&T provider, that's a million more iPhones that would not otherwise have been sold. God bless 'em.

Numbers would be in the 10's of millions (if not more) by now if Apple hadn't locked it into at&t only... Yet another bone-headed move by Apple...

What's the math?

There's no math. Just the mindless rants of the clueless. And this iPhone hack business is a non-story, interesting only to nerds who live in their parents basements. This sort of thing never, ever goes anywhere on a large scale. It's mostly for bragging rights. Unlocking the iPhone will not results in millions of additional sales to people yearning to be free of the yoke of the evil entities known as Apple and at&t. It's quite hilarious actually, how this story has grown legs.

Yes, but then when Apple puts out a software update, fixing bugs/stability, adding new features... and re-locking the un-locked phones, you will see all of these people lined up at the Genius bar, only to be told a big, fat TOO BAD!
That certainly is poetic justice, but the poor consumers will be mad at Apple, not at the people who sold them the "unlocking" software/code. And, that's not good for the consumer or for Apple.

So you admit you are clueless. you probably don't even have an iphone.. My last ATT phone bill was over $300. Of course, since you probably don't have one, you wouldn't realize that when you go over minutes you are charged for them.
ATT's customer service has been great, I will give them that. but their service for phones sucks. I get at least 6 dropped calls a day, and even more calls that fail before they are placed. the network is AWFUL.
I love my iphone... I have three of them... bought two the first day and an additional one a week later. I cancelled my contract with a superior provider to have the iphone.
If ATT had a way better network, then I would have no complaints. But the bottom line is they suck for call quality.

Noteworthy is the fact that CRICKET, unlimited minutes for a flat rate can be used with the unlocked phone. They use the SIM card as well.

I hate to break it to you but Cricket is CDMA and analog. The iPhone is GSM only. Your iPhone will never work on a CDMA network.

Will this work with Verizon?

Verizon is CDMA which is a completely different network protocol than the iPhone's GSM. No amount of "unlocking" will ever allow a GSM iPhone to work on a CDMA network. The only two nationwide GSM networks in the US are AT&T and T-Mobile. There are several regional GSM carriers too.

iphoneunlocking.com still not available. You'd think they'd get the site up just to get hits and sell ads. Something is fishy here.

So if you want a reliable service, you can forget about getting an iPhone... Maybe (huge maybe at that) version 2.x will have support for the other protocols thus allowing the CUSTOMER to select which service he/she goes with.
I guess I'll just wait to see when Apple updates the iPod... MAYBE they'll bring the intereface from the iPhone to it... Then again, maybe Apple will pull it's head out of it's a$$...

They went to Verizon first and Verizon said no. No iPhones on their network. Unlike the GSM networks where locking out a phone is very difficult (as these hacks show) it is easy for Verizon and Sprint to block any phone from Apple from appearing on their network. That leaves only AT&T and T-Mobile. Do you really think adding T-Mobile to the list of nationwide carriers would increase sales of iPhones tenfold?
Instead Apple went the route of getting AT&T to subsidize the iPhone through a cut of the subscriptions. This drama is just starting to unfold and Apple is taking a long term view in my opinion. In a few years, they will have changed the mobile phone industry.

Changed for the better! It's already better for us AT&T/Apple iPhone customers!

That's very, very difficult. It requires a phone with both GSM and CDMA radios. A few BlackBerrys and Treos (sold by Verizon Wireless and Sprint as "world phones") offer this, but they specifically do not roam on AT&T or T-Mobile over here. Apple would have to intentionally design a phone to operate on both CDMA and GSM networks. However, unlike with GSM networks, CDMA networks don't just accept any phone with compatible protocols. Since there is no removable SIM card inside with the subscriber details, a CDMA phone has to be programmed to operate on the network. Therefore, Verizon and Sprint would have to want users to be able to use a phone on their network in order for it to work.

Well, since Apple DID design the phone from the ground up, they COULD have done it. Even if it took them a few months longer to do it, it would have been BETTER for the CUSTOMER. In stead, they with what was better for Apple's profit margin. While I do understand they are out to make money, it's not smart to force people to break contracts with other phone service providors just to get a new device.
Also, I really don't care about getting coverage outside the US. At this point, the chance of me needing to travel outside the US is slim to nil. IF I do have to travel, it will be for work, and I'll have them provide me with a phone to use during the trip (they have ones set aside for just such cases).
IF at&t can make their network worth a damn, I MIGHT consider switching, in about 1-1/2 years when my current contract is up. Then again, I also have another family member on my plan, so I have to be sure to not spend any more per month and get the same service level and reliability of coverage.

Are you sure? A friend of mine has Cricket here in Albuquerque, and I am positive she had to put a SIM chip in the phone... if not I guess I am screwed for Cricket.
I came from Alltel which is CDMA... CDMA has much better reception, and much better call quality than GSM. GSM can be as open as you want, and it might work in Europe, but I just want a phone that works where I am! And ATT has a hard time of doing that. I do not know how they can legally say "the least dropped calls". I find that impossible, considering with Alltel and Verizon I literally NEVER had a dropped call in our market... and with ATT I am lucky to get a call to go through to begin with... forget about the fact that 80% of my calls drop... and these are full signals mind you. they have some serious issues here.
I'd say about 6-8 calls I get a day say they had to call me two or more times because they constantly get a fast busy signal. This equates to calls people cannot even make to me. None of this ever happened with Verizon or Alltel, or Sprint.
apple made a bet people would settle for terrible service to have the coolest phone, and their bet paid off... because even knowing how crappy ATT service is, I still wouldnt give up my iphone.
If I could get the iPhone to work on another carrier, I would give up ATT, no questions asked.
