Garage Band and Sound

Hi
I have a G4 PowerBook. After I use Garage Band my "Sound" under System preferences changes balance to either mostly left speaker or mostly right speaker. Needless to say I want it to remain "in the middle" of right and left to get the perfect balance of sound. Any Idea why it does this or how to stop this?
