But given that flash capacities continue to increase, I would expect that a 100GB iPod Touch is less than two years away, if not much sooner.

Is anyone else highly disappointed that the iPod Touch will only be 8GB & 16GB? It feels like they're taking a step backwards on this one. Maybe it's just me. I was all set to hint to my wife to get me one for the holidays, but to go from an 80GB to a 16GB? Why? Because of the WiFi? Buying songs over the iPod is "eh..." at best, as far as I'm concerned.
What a bummer!
Yes...to a degree. While I understand the desire to not "mess with" the iPhone form factor, I consider it at least slight, if not more, error to not do a hard drive version of the iPod Touch. Considering the primary reason to have a bigger screen is to better watch videos, it seems at least a little stupid to limit the storage space to only 16 gb. You are talking about a dozen movies or so and not much else. While a dozen movies is still quite a bit, it is still kind of pain to have to cycle movies and TV shows in and out if you use the iPod a lot to watch video (you would be hard pressed to watch a dozen movies in one sitting, however).
It also seems stupid to no include an email client on it with the WiFi access, but I consider that a much more minor "mistake".
The WiFi iTunes is kind of a "duh!" thing to me. That should have been up and running for the iPhone.

Fact is, flash is still to expensive right now to be able to give us 64GB of space, but with Apple buying so much, they themselves are creating a huge market for flash memory and will eventually bring the price down. I expect to see 32GB capacities by the middle of next year if not sooner.
I for one am pretty well pleased that they didn't go with a HDD after all (as much as I wanted them to)--it's a true step forward in forcing themselves to bring more reliability to the iPod line. HDDs have served us well, but their time in iPods may be limited.

Camera fuctions would have been a nice move for the iPods , seeing how apple is advertising the iPods and the iPhones as the only thing you need to carry with you . It would have been nice to have the iPod touch with a camera for the on the go snap shots .
More memroy would have also been nice , 16 and 32 GBs of memory space would have been a lot nicer for the the iPod Touch . This iPod is mreo of an iPod Video and the lack of space for your TV Shows and Movies is kind of diappointing .
Widgets would have also been a nice app for the iPod Touch , Add some of your WIDGETS to the iPod Touch , as well as some of the other Apps that are offered on the iPhone . Maps and Notes would have also been nice to have .
Bluetooth would have been great as well , the fact they left out Bluetooth in the iPod Touch will in some how get more consumers upset . Yeah your not going to use the iPod Tocuh as your cell phone , but with more and more companies making WireLess HeadPhones for your Walkmans and other MPS Devices it would have been nice to have that as an option .
Now for the WiFi iTunes store , Im not sure what they have on it yet , but i didnt see anything about the Podcast on there new WiFi Store . It would be nice if i could download some PodCast while i was on the go .
Some of these things can be fixed with an UPDATE on there software updates . Other things might be found in the next version of the iPod Touch as well . As for these version im going to just go ahead and buy this one and be happy with it . I have waited for a good iPod that would display my video better and that is what you do get so im really happy with that part .

Seems like many don't like the 16GB limit. I might be nuts but I have a 8GB iPhone and its plenty for me. I wonder if a 16GB iPhone is coming soon? I love this iPod Touch but I've got to ask you this... why not just get an iPhone, you don't need to sign up for AT&T. you get wi-fi Safari and email and the iPod functionality... ah i guess it all comes down to the memory limitation.
yeah the iPhone does have a few extras that the iPod Touch doesn't have - Camera , Widgets , Notes and Phone Functions . Other then those , the iPod Touch is perfect .
Aswell as the iPhone needs to be hooked up to an serves to use alot of there functions , I would think in the life of the iPod touch they would add some cool Functions , Like Widgets , Notes , Maps and other App's with a software update .
Yes i do agree with you that APPLE does have something up there sleves with the iPhone , I would think that they are going to have 16 and 32GB iPhone here soon , that or they will be offering something even bigger , maybe a 32 and 64GB options . But i dont see that coming out for at least another 6 months to a year ....

It would seem that for reasons based solely on cost they have chosen to b*rstardise the iphone rather than create a true widescreen ipod from scratch and I assume this is why it has no hard drive.
This is first ipod since lauch that has made we consider another brand. As I said big mistake imo and no sale for me.

There are a few reasons for going flash memory over HDD. Size...While many may say that an extra few millimeters of thickness wouldn't matter, it just might. Samsung's 32GB flash drive is portable computer HDD size. It's not what regular "thumb drive" sizes are. Cost...16GB flash drives are ~$125 - 175. Considering that the highest of a technology starts out noticeably higher price than the rest, I wouldn't be amazed if a 32GB flash drive costed ~$300. Power...HDDs take notably more power, especially during spin-up. That would bring the iPod touch battery life well below recent iPod run times. I would even guess that the 32GB flash would use a noticeable -- barely? -- more power than the 16GB.
Would I highly prefer and pay up to $100 extra for a 32GB iPod touch? It wouldn't be a "no." I think, I will be happy with the 16GB until my next upgrade ( purchase ).
