Calling the iPhone “the iPod of phones” isn’t just a quip; it really is the best way to think of Apple’s latest handheld gadget. more

Not that it's any less relevant now, but I seem to remember an article much like this one appearing here shortly after the iPhone went on sale. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Indeed, there was the original Editor's Note that Mr. Frakes wrote on this topic (even with an identical headline).
This particular article appears as the back-page Spotlight column in the October issue, the contents of which were published today.

You write the following:
"But here's the truth that Apple-haters don't want to hear:..."
And this one tiny fragment pretty much sums up Apple worshippers (or perhaps, worshippers of almost any kind.)
1) I have the "truth".
2) People who disagree with me are "haters".

Ah, the old "let's misrepresent what's being said instead of discussing the content" ploy.
Notice I didn't write "everyone who disagrees with me is an Apple-hater." No, I wrote that the people who are Apple-haters won't like what's being said.
