On the iPod Classic, I have heard that it's not possible to disable the split screen, i.e. the entire right half of the iPod screen being obscured by randomly generated album art. Is this true? Why would Apple design it that badly?
If it's not true, then how can that splitscreen be disabled?

The split-screen view appears mainly in menus where the menu names are short; once you get into lists of -- for example -- artist names or song titles, the split-screen view goes away and you're presented with a standard list.

So the splitscreen never obscures any menu or list you're trying to look at?

Correct; for the most part, it's just eye candy for menus with shorter items. Although it does make the interface feel a bit more sluggish than that of previous iPods (but that seems to be alleviated somewhat with this weekend's iPod software update).
