So, here we are, at the wake of the new line of iPods. A touch variety. I was very excited about it and even more excited about it when they revealed it doing as much as it does. Space doesn't bother me.
However, how reliable do you think the third party community is going to be towards the Touch? The biggest detractor to me is the read only calendar but if the Touch gets hacked, it can be corrected by a third party. Right?
Basically, for almost the same money you can either get an Touch or an iPhone. I don't want AT&T but i can just hack the authorization and use it without the phone.
I guess the question is, should a person by the iPhone, hack the authorization, and make use of all the additional features it holds for the same price (but just a cut in the GBs) or should one get the Touch in hopes that the third party support will be able to carry it with just as much functionality as the iPhone?

In response to your ability to be hacked and use Calendar to its fullest, yes it is possible, whether or not it happens is another thing. And Apple may make it, in future updates able to add / edit / remove events; you just never know.
AT&T is something everyone can now look past. The fact that there are 3+ sources codes out there to unlock the iPhone makes AT&T something old. I shoot a question at you though; for the same price as an iPhone 8GB you can get a 16GB iPod Touch and not have to worry about possibly buying or hacking your iPhone and voiding your warranty.
To close up, lets address your last issue. The iPod Touch will never, ever hold up to the same features as an iPhone. The fact that you cannot make calls on it makes that entire statement false forever and always. The 3rd parties will never be able to make the iPod Touch as feature built as the iPhone.
Basically it is your call. I had the same problem a week ago, and I bought the iPhone and cannot be happier. The battery life is something else, but that is only because I run the hell out of my iPhone and its features.

Its possible but I'm not sure its probable. Depends on how popular the touch is and whether Apple decides to open it up more.

I've not read up on the hacks to open it up so bear with me. The thing I worry about these types of things is what happens if apple includes in their update something that breaks the hack. You'll basically be without a phone. Now I'm no AT&T fanboy but they're no worse or better then the others. I've had AT&T, Cincular (before the merger) and Verizon. All seem to be pretty decent at least here in the northeast.

What additional features are you wishing the iTouch had? do you need a phone? Personally I'd go with the device that fits your needs now, not in the future with possible hacks. You're bound to be disappointed especially when those hacks fail because of an update.

Well. The main feature of the iPhone that I don't need is... well... the phone. I'm already in a contract with Verizon and it's going to be a long time before that contract is up (I bet by then, there will be a 3G 30GB iPhone). One of the biggest features that I'm looking for is the iCal on the go that the iPhone has. All the third party hacks are very nice and a wonderful bonus and keep it feature rich.
I suppose if the Touch had the calendar feature, it would be a no brainer for me. Or if there was a third party app that made the calendar feature useable, then it would be a no brainer. I would go with the Touch.

I think there are a LOT of us who agree with you. If the iPod Touch suddenly came to a little fuller life with a Calendar program that would allow input and sync with our Macs, there would be a lot of very happy Apple enthusiasts who would trade in their Palms and Missing Sync Problems. It seems like such a "no-brainer" for Apple--I can't understand their hesitancy. A few other issues need to be addresses, too, like the poorer video quality, but that would not be a stopper for me right now.
