I bought a Mac PowerBook G4 second-hand and the person who sold it to me didn't have the startup disk. He also didn't have the admin. password. This laptop is in good shape, but I can't update it or download anything to it without knowing or changing the admin. password. I found this post on the web. It lists steps to change the admin. password. I've yet to try it, fearing a worse outcome. Can anyone help or at leat tell me if these steps listed below will work? Any help is greatly appreciated. I realize it's likely well beyond the need at this point, but for the sake of someone else searching for this answer.
you don't need the install disk at all.
Boot into single user mode holding down apple + s at boot.
Run a disk check by typing fsck -y
ReMount the drive with write access by typing in mount -uw /
remove the setup completion marker by typing rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
Reboot and you should be walked through setting up a new admin user account.
