I would like to nominate MacTeX. (http://www.tug.org/mactex/) As a writer, it is the software that makes me want to buy another Mac and another....
MaxTeX and its associated programs (TexShop, BibDesk etc) just works (unlike some software ;^{ ) to create beautiful books, papers, web pages, etc. It is simple to install, and its free. There is a bit of a learning curve to learn latex, but if you want to write anything beyond single web pages, there is nothing to beat it.
So this is my nomination for 3rd party software and Gem of the year!
