RealNetworks' Rhapsody and TiVo have banded together to provide users of TiVo DVRs the ability to use Rhapsody to play music. more

TiVO executives have no clue. I was going to buy the TiVO HD if they ever have a plan to let me upgrade my TiVO 2's lifetime subscription for $200. But now I don't have to wonder if they ever do it.
I hear there's better DVRs coming, that will make TiVO look old and tired. But that doesn't need to happen. Partnering with Rhapsody and MTV using WM DRM means they did it to themselves!

I think there was an upgrade for the lifetime subscription when the HD version came out, but it was a limited time offer.
This is why I thought Apple should have bought TIVO, and made an AppleTV/Tivo/iTMS/Cable box to begin with.

$12.99 for what? For no monthly cost users can access their music (and other media) from their television with a Playstation 3 or a AppleTV. I do not own a XBox so I do not know what its media streaming capabilities are.
Also, with the internet capabilities of the PS3 (as well as the Wii) one can listen to several internet radio stations for additional enhanced listening pleasure.

Many have tried... and many have failed. Basic DVR functions are almost a dime a dozen, but there is something to be said about the Tivo GUI; as well as user experience.
I recently sold my Tivo series 2 for a variety of reasons. It has been less than a month and I seriously miss it. I will be getting a new Tivo in a couple of years (I know it sounds weird, but I have my reasons... however odd they maybe). And I do look forward to the day Tivo is back in our house.
Unless the Sony Playstation 3 DVR pans out and eventually makes it to the U.S. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I know what you mean. I "upgraded" my Directv series 2 box for the dual tuner HD box from Directv. Nothing but problems!!! I really hate this box!!!

We've been TiVo users for a long time, but I'll never use this or their Amazon Unbox stuff.
I remember reading a long time ago about TiVos being sent to the Apple Stores and then suddenly being removed before they went on sale. I wonder what deal was lost... But then we got the AppleTV, and if the iTunes Store and HD content and rentals come along we'll only need TiVo for recording TV. The AppleTV does everything else we need it to.

Oh crap! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif I cannot belive I am getting that old. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif I completly forgot about Connect360. Of course the 360 does steaming media. What makes it even worse is I even have a couple of Nullriver apps.; and even droped them a line wondering if they were going to do a ConnectPS3.
Too many Pink Floyd concerts when I was a teen. Man I could eat the entire McDonalds menu after one of those concerts... never could figure out why. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I don't quite understand where all the hate for Tivo comes from. It provides a good service and is only looking for ways to expand its offerings. The only thing I can think of is that it is in some ways competing with Apple, thus it must be disliked. Except for YouTube (no loss in my eyes), it can do everything the AppleTV can, plus record live TV. And unlike AppleTV you can rent movies and buy TV shows directly from the unit or via any computer from Amazon's website. Apple seems to have no interest in providing DVR service and Tivo does what it's intended to do quite well.
Does Rhapsody interest me? No, but if I were already a Rhapsody subscriber and had a Tivo, this sounds like a great service.

My big beef with TiVo (now) is that there is no longer a lifetime service option on the TiVo systems. I have a Series 1 HD-212 TiVo (20 GB upgraded to 80 GB) with lifetime service as well as a ReplayTV 5040 (40 GB upgraded to 250 GB) with lifetime service.
I was ready to purchase a HD TiVo until the switch away from lifetime service plans. Why should I pay TiVo $10 a month plus the cost of the DVR, when I can get a DVR for free with a $5 per month charge from Cox. Yes, the TiVo is probably a better unit, but I just can't get myself to purchase the unit AND pay a monthly fee. Until TiVo changes their decision to not offer lifetime plans, they are off my list of future DVR purchases....

The TiVo Series3 and TiVo HD boxes are exceptionally well built devices. I have the Series3 in my living room and the new TiVo HD in my bedroom, which replaces my old Series2 box. The Series3 is a beautiful piece of hardware with its OLED display and whisper-quiet operation. The new TiVo HD is better than any Series2 box and much quieter. The 160 GB hard drive is slightly louder than the 250 GB drive in the Series3 unit.
I have no problem paying for CableCards in both TiVo boxes. I had numerous cable box DVR's before the Series3 was released, and all of them were pure garbage. They were slow, they constantly locked up, and none of them offered the recording time equivalent to the TiVo box. Also, I could not stand the banner ads interfering with the program guide!
I don't care if TiVo doesn't offer a lifetime subscription. Their lifetime plan only applied to a specific service number. So if that box died, so did your lifetime plan. I saved money with a three year contract plan on my Series3, and then did a monthly plan on the TiVo HD to take advantage of the multi-box discount.
The TiVo software is exceptional, and no cable box or satellite DVR even comes close. Apple will never offer a DVR (they want you to buy from iTunes), and their software will never match TiVo. Also, the Amazon UnBox is great! I can download a movie from the TiVo box or from Amazon's website at any time. Much better than paying a monthly plan with NetFlix when I rarely rent movies.
I could care less about Rhapsody. I hope TiVo offers AAC support someday so my TiVo box can play all my iTunes music, not just the MP3's.

Assuming you have a Mac, you can install LAME and that will allow the TiVo to play AAC files. It will not allow it to play DRM'ed iTunes music of course (since that is something no non-Apple product can do).
As for someone else's complaint about no more lifetime subscriptions, from a business perspective I can easily understand why TiVo when away from that. Unless they are selling a lot of units, that quickly becomes a losing strategy. From a consumer perspective, I can understand why it would be frustrating to no longer have an option you once did.
As for the cable company's offering being cheaper, aren't you paying a fee to rent the box? Thus, it's not $5 a month, it's $5 plus the rental fee of the equipment. Previously, I had a Moxi DVR from Charter and I must say it was actually a nice piece of equipment, I'd say somewhat better than TiVo (though with less features). Now, I've moved and have Comcast and I'm looking forward to buying a TiVo HD and renting a couple of CableCards so I can get rid of that POS box they provide.
