Here's a piece of trivia you overlooked, perhaps someone might find it useful:

This is utter crap. So now you show people how to illegally use an iPhone so it can bricked via the next update? Not even a disclaimer that what your showing people is a violation of the EULA and voids the warranty? I hope you're found accountable for helping people ruin their iPhones. And all those programs you showed were crap that would run fine if properly programmed the correct way Apple has said to develop programs for the iPhone. Macworld, your lack of responsibility is pathetic.

You care to cite the law anyone breaks by installing third-party apps onto their phone? BA, EULAs are not the word of law.
And as you've never installed any of these apps, how exactly would you know about the quality of their programming?
Your anger at stepping away from Apple's suggested path is noted, but beyond that you're woefully ill-informed. Third-party apps do not ruin iPhones.

Isn't this the same message used by snake oil salesmen peddling a worthless elixer to rubes?

They are on par with what a lot of other cell phones offer - and although I don't own an iPhone yet, I'm not sure I would turn my nose up at ANY indie effort to build on the Next Cool Thing.

As well as preachers, politicians, and physicians.

Not ALL physicians are Snake oil salesmen. I would venture to guess that preachers and politicians have some worthwhile folks, as well.
Come on, Chris. You are usually not this thin-skinned, and usually not this quick to stereotype. Do you need a hug? Where's the Chris that we trust and admire?

You know. If people spent time and wrote code the way that Apple requests them to, Hacker's wouldn't HAVE to go back after every Apple update and refigure out how to get these non-conforming programs to work.
A majority of the things you were doing are avilabale on the web.
Let me think "Use web version and have workable iPhone".. pause for dramatic effect.. "Or hack my phone and wait for the next update from Apple that will brick my phone and render it completely useless, turning it into a $400 paperweight".
I think i'll go with the first one, thank you very much.

You're right. They are the words of men. A digital handshake as it were.

Sorry, Ken, you missed the point. I meant that ANYONE -- well intentioned and not so -- can suggest that they have a point of view worth considering. To suggest that only snake oil salesman offer a peek behind the curtain is silly.

Understood - once again, an example of why we ALL (including myself) need to pause and take a deep breath before writing Forum responses, be they hackers, MacWorld editors, doctors, et al.

How soon we forget. The installation of third-party apps DID NOT BRICK iPhones. This was caused by unlocking iPhones, which is a completely different issue (and one I intentionally stayed away from).
For the most part, I composed this video to answer the question "Why would anyone want to install third-party apps on their iPhone?" A web-application is not going to customize the appearance of your iPhone, it won't allow you to move greater quantities of data off your iPhone, it won't allow you to install custom ringtones on your iPhone...etc. Web apps have their place but they have their limits -- requiring that you're connected to the web being the primary one.
