Though an apparent jab at Microsoft Vista, there is a Leopard single-user client version (129), a client family pack (199), a 10-user server version (499), and an unlimited server version (999) as the article points out -- making original quote seem like a contradiction. However, unlike MS, all consumers (and many small businesses) can use the same client version without wondering whether they will have enough features.

Not a contradiction. Vista is a client OS - Server 2003 is a server OS.
SO:
For Vista's 6 client OS versions, we get two ways of purchasing OS X Client: single pack or 5-pack (not different versions - just different licenses, one's for legal use on 5 machines).
For Server 2003's at least 3 versions (I know of at least Standard, Enterprise and Web, there are likely more) we get 2 versions of OS X Server: limited user and unlimited user.
The family pack is a discounted 5 license pack, nothing more. Server products on the other hand should be compared to the server product on the Windows side, not to the client (Vista).

Wow, they have updated TextEdit. I actually use TextEdit a lot so this is nice to see. I love that it can now supports OpenDocument formats.
The Stickies-style notes notes, Instant Alpha Background Removal, and PDF Manipulation in Preview look very nice.
Photo Booth is looking pretty good too. I hope the video recording can utilize the Backdrop effects as well.
I love the look of this UI Recording and Playback in Automator.
I am a little sad that they didn't upgrade the Blue Gel scroll bars.
All in all, it's a great new OS.

There just so many refinements in the update, some long over due, like the Finder not hanging when a network drive goes MIA.

I hope that's a confirmed feature and not just speculation. This alone would justify the update for me. I have three shared volumes I regularly use at home and am really annoyed by the lengthy beachball when the server is unavailable, especially when I've simply forgotten to unmount the volumes before taking my laptop out of the house.
Edit: I looked at the new feature list and saw the "AutoFS" UNIX feature, which I assume is the underlying functionality that prevents the Finder hanging?

I can't believe that we still have no ability to add more columns to List View other than Date Created, Date Modified, Kind, Size, Version, Comments, Label. We have all this metadata and it's only used for searching. That's pathetic. Think about it, iTunes and iPhoto are more powerful file managers than the Finder. I can easily assign "Birthday" to my photos in iPhoto but I can't assign "Project X" to my files in the Finder except for manually typing it in the Comments field of Get Info, which is useless for any application that uses Keywords, and is a very Windows-like way of doing things - manually typing after clicking on each file. Ironically, I can't say Windows-like in this regard because Vista has superior support for metadata in Explorer and even in the Save dialog with the ability to assign star ratings and Keywords (like iPhoto).

It looks like Apple, Inc. is not improving the Finder in ways that many have discussed previously. It would be great if they added extensive Metadata support to the Finder. Maybe some day they will catch up. Really the user should be able to define any type of field to be saved as metadata with the file. Further an infinite (or arbitrarily large) number of user customizable fields should be able to be added to customized Save/Save As dialogs.

Ooh...one other feature I just noticed that has long been an issue: Apple has improved video deinterlacing in DVD Player. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I just hope it is a significant improvement.

I would assume since it requires a 1.6GHz or greater CPU. I could be mistaken though.

I noticed that requirement on the Tech Specs page. My 2.0 GHz MacBook Pro shouldn't have a problem, but it's good to point out that fact for other folks. I wouldn't even try it with my 12" PowerBook G4 (867 MHz, the minimum system for Leopard).

This is the news we've been waiting for. A shiny almost-new MacBook is headed our way.
Yay!
P.S. Kinda thought the Al Gore joke was a bit funny, assuming the poster was being facetious. The fur is flying on the Greenpeace threads.

Then switch to Vista.

Uhm, thanks for the suggestion but your time might be better spent learning how to decipher smilies.
Hint: This ------> /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif is a wink. (Note that it follows my "greedy" comment.)
Given my reg date and post count, do you really think I'd consider switching to Vista? XP via Boot Camp is about as all the MS I care to endure, thankyouverymuch.

Guess Apple is seeing that a huge percentage of their customers are still carrying books around. It was fun while it lasted. (I saw it coming with the last two versions of iLife getting more and more expensive)

Yeah, I saw that, too, when I looked into upgrading our iLife package. (Still on v. 4, mostly...) I looked at iWork, too. The education discounts aren't near what they used to be. Oh, well. I think I'll just wait longer for Leopard and get it when it comes on a new Mac.

Good news about the G4's being covered -- think I"d better get my old G4 iBook in for servicing, so I can install Leopard on there and turn it into my husband's personal laptop (I can actually rescue my MacBook from him!).

My apologies. I erred in not associating you Graemlins. I took your comment to be serious, especially after reading your previously statement. However, in my own defense, I wasn't the only one to misunderstand.
Perhaps, my retort is also guided by my distaste for any comment that references Apple, Jobs and Greed in the same sentence.
