If you ask guitarists for a company that excels in the growing world of digital music creation, youre likely to hear Line 6 more times than not.

That is BECAUSE they build for the Mac. A truly professional company will be cross-platform. I will not even bother with PC-tunnel-vision developers.

I'm sorry you see it this way. I've been a guitar player for a long time and thought people would be interested in what drives Line 6 to make the products they do.
I've been caught before with Mac software that hasn't been updated and it's not fun to try to create music like that.

As a fellow guitar player... ignore them.

Jim, thanks for the artical, I was kind of hoping you were anouncing some simple pice of equipment that I could plug my son's Fender into that would make it easy to get quality sound into my iMac (Using the mike jack on the iMac is more that a struggel) I would like to see you as a player do some articales on ways to do this on the cheep as my son is just starting out and I would like to get him started.
What ever happened to Aseroid? (Retorical question)
A California Superior Court has granted a request by Apple Computer to serve subpoenas on three Mac rumor Web sites seeking information on who leaked facts about an un-announced audio hardware product code named "Asteroid" or "Q97", court documents obtained Monday by The Mac Observer showed.

You could use Line 6's simplest POD product, the Pocket Pod, for example. Or any of a range of audio interfaces with instrument input. There's even one which behaves much like a guitar cable, IK Multimedia's Stealth Plug. For between $80 and $130 you and your son should be set. Google for USB guitar interface.

Schneb -- thanks /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
jstephe -- cweber gave you some good advice. There are a ton of products out there that will let your son just plug in and start playing. Most of them these days are pretty easy to use, so you won't have any problems.
I've had quite a few questions recently about audio interfaces, so I will do an article on the ones that I've used. I've also had lots of questions on what amps I like/use, cables and almost everything else you can imagine.
Everything is important, right down to the guitar strap, which I recently learned myself.
The big thing with guitar tone is that it's very subjective. I may recommend something that one of the other people hate -- it all comes down to what works and sounds good to you.

There are a lot of good options here. I just bought an Edirol (Roland) UA-4fx. It has both audio and MIDI in one unit. The audio has a few simple amp/modeling effects. It's not real expensive (about $150). Just make sure you use the latest drivers from their website if you go this way. If you don't care about MIDI, search for "USB audio interface mac os x". Firewire would be better, but is more expensive. Hope this helps.

As a fellow fellow guitar player, the article reads like a press release from Line6, complete with product shots. Then again, if someone is getting their gear reviews from Macworld, Line6 is probably a good way for them to go. And no slam intended by that - simplicity is a rare thing these days, and frees you up to just play.

Jim,
Thanks for the nice expose' on Line 6. I too am a guitarist and have a PODXT Live that I really like. I use it into a 50 Watt, Single 12" speaker MusicMan amp that I got back in the early 80's. It sounds great. I highly recommend Line 6 and their products. From my perspective they are a company that really CARES to make the best products that they can. In many ways they are like Apple, Inc. because both companies care about the end user experience and providing products that are easy to use and are truly useful.
Let the naysayers have their say and ignore it.:p
Speaking of getting caught with Mac software that was not updated I was a former Opcode Studio Vision user, and ouch did it hurt when Opcode just went away. Oh well the Logic Studio package from Apple is very tempting, I am a current Digital Performer user.
Thanks again for the article, have a good day!

I have a M-Audio Black Box, and it works great. I like the zero-latency when hooked up to my Power Book and it works well with Garageband and Ableton Live. You can get it and an included pedal board for around $129.
