Perhaps someone could explain what's wrong with Yahoo mail.
I've had the same (FREE) email address for the past 6 to 8 years regardless of service provider.
I can't say that about anyone else I know personally.
I have never had a problem with it.
It also happens to be what is offered by SBC DSL which I currently use.
Thanks
MM

Thankfully most staff agree that the new look is a step in the wrong direction.
As much good as 10.5 brings to the Mac in various areas (some parts are still lacking like Finder, absense of cut/copy/paste, maximize window function, ... ) the new look is just bad. I can't imagine facing it every day. There is so much wrong with it, I would want to revert all that back to Tiger in one big swoop. Get the new great stuff while keeping the old interface.
Note that I've only had a chance to play with a Tiger for a big half hour; so it might be that if I were to actually use it myself, that it might grow on me.
My interface observations:
Dock
- dock tray/platform doesn't need to be there, just let the background be transparent, plain and simple. Honsetly who would be confused that those are 'special icons' if there weren't a box around them or they weren't served on a tray?
- The faded light blue aqua bubble to indicate an open application is barely visible, lacks contrast, hampered by icon reflections. The arrow served it's purpose and had better contrast.
- There's some odd shaped curved shadow line going through the dock deck. Why it is there, I don't know.
- Mirror effect of windows above the dock does nothing but hamper visibility. Eyecandy that in fact hampers seeing that blue bubble that's not that clear to begin with.
- Address book icon folder represents the applications folder?! Very confusing. Move the address book icon to the last application spot and then add your applications to the left of documents & downloads.
Menu bar
Transparency hurts legibility, it is better / more conservative than during their initial demos, but I'd rather live without it. The stars in the default background give a 'sense' of burned pixels in the menu bar (white dot next to H in history in Safari;s menu bar). By default the menu bar now looks like you have an issue with your monitor. Maximize Safari. Then look at the odd hues in the menu. (I have seen CRTs with such discoloration issues in corners)
It gets better when you pick the earth background. But still the new shade of the menus is too dark, imo.
The darker shade of grey, causes me to think the monitor is very dimmed, where it in fact is still half or 3/4 brightness. Crank it up to see the menus better and any white on screen is just blinding.
Also saw that the finder's blue folder icons lack contrast. The monochrome images / icons on the folders appear too light to be of actual use. Very poor choice.
I sincerely hope Apple will get a ton of feedback from consumers, prosumers and professionals and allow access to some of these things via appearance. Unified look is great, but it is the eyecandy around edges that make it look like a child's school project.

Address Books Synchronize with Yahoo feature raises the alarming possibility that there are still people out there using Yahoo for mail. That cant be truecan it?

I've often wondered the same thing... Hotmail too?

What's wrong with Yahoo Mail? I mean when I first got Tiger I tried Mail and much like Thunderbird or anything else I didn't like it. Is Mail in Leopard that much better than Tiger? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

This is a fun idea. With a bit more info from the editors, it could form the basis for a valuable resource and a useful reference for all of us that will be converting to Leopard over the next few months. Here's what I suggest and request:
Create a Summary page, that would list all the draft choices. Provide a sentence or two that describes each drafted feature, and another short paragraph that explains the editor's reasons for choosing it. Currently, we have the editor's reasons for a bit less than half of the draft choices.
I think it would be most useful to group the discrete features, so that all the Time Machine features are together, all the Preview features are together, all the iChat features are together, etc. Listing these groups in alphabetical order might make for the easiest reference use. The draft position (both overall and within an editor's list) and links to the current article could appear after the editor's rationale for drafting each item.
I hope you will consider an enhancement of this sort. A summary page could be a popular and useful reference for Macworld readers.
