FileMaker not compatible with Mac OS X Leopard

They are so clue-impared. I complained about being a long-time Filemaker user and even though I have paid for every upgrade for years, they don't give me a break in upgrade price compared to someone who didn't upgrade for five or six versions. They simply said they want to encourage everyone to upgrade. But why would upgrading from 8.5 to 9 cost the same as upgrading from 5? I've paid a lot for upgrades in-between! What happened to loyalty to customers who've stuck with them?
Yep and Intuit is even worse for QuickBooks upgrade price on the Mac. I have had 4 versions of QuickBooks through 2006 upgrading each time. Guess what the "upgrade" price was -- same as the price for any first time buyer. Needless to say I did not "Upgrade" to the 2007 version because the features added were not compelling. I just want feature parity with the Windows version and binary file compatibility between the Windows and Mac version so that there is no Import/Export involved.

BUT NOW.... Now there is virtually NO entry-level graphics/painting softare available for the Macintosh platform. All the prior programs have bloated and either been killed or bundled with $500+ "suite" packages. Canvas for the Mac is being killed off by the current owner ADT (ah, I do miss Deneba!). We have NO Mac/Claris Draw, no Mac/Claris Paint, no Cricket Graph, and no version of those older programs will work on OSX (and many are buggy on System 9). Cricket Graph was SUCH a nice user interface, and did exactly what I needed in a way that Excel has never approached. Alas, it's dead--thanks to Computer Associates. iPhoto is nice for organizing pictures, but is not a useful bitmap editor. Many people producing mid-range poster illustrations are stuck using PowerPoint for the job--unbelievable as it is. Yes, high-end draw programs would be better suited, but let's face it: most users can't afford the expense of purchase or the time requirement for the learning curve of such advanced programs.
My professional scientific society now requires that posters be submitted in powerpoint format! Totally inappropriate, and yet there is nothing else within reasonable reach of most academic scientists.
WE NEED SOME BASIC DRAW, PAINT, & CHARTING APPLICATIONS!!!!
Since Apple has discontinued its own draw & paint applications, I'm not very surprised that they're disinterested in keeping FileMaker up to date either.
There is a BIG OPPORTUNITY here for someone to fill this niche!

I am going to take a stab in the dark and make a wild guess that the SQL integration benefits that 9 brought us are now causing the conflict with leopard.
There could also be issues with Time Machine. I don't know if Time Machine ignores open files, but it's important that FileMaker files are closed for its backups to be any good.

But there's a fundamental problem with this idea that also lead to this stupid Leopard incompatibility... FileMaker Pro is a Windows application. It came from the Mac and it is used on tons of Macs, but last I heard, they sell more Windows copies than Mac ones. (After all, if you had a choice between Access and FileMaker, what would you do?)
FileMaker 9 for Mac doesn't even use a standard Mac installer; it is a custom application. Why? Because they developed both the Mac and Windows versions on one platform.
But this is still no excuse for not being 100% Leopard compatible this week. Every other Mac developer in the world has found that the year of warning Apple gave them was enough time to get ready. Presumably FileMaker had longer. What an utter disgrace that they couldn't have seen this coming.

I wasn't actively paying attention to FileMaker during the 30 day window of $30 upgrade from 8.0 PPC to 8.5 Universal Binary and missed it. Still believe that should have been a free enhancement.
Paid for 7.0 to 8.0 upgrade but didn't install it until after 8.5. 8.0 was not enough better to be worth the cost. Have skipped 8.5 and 9.0 and have no plans to upgrade FileMaker ever again no matter that I use it most every day.
The one feature continuously missing from FileMaker is that I want a Page Setup and Printer selection to be sticky to a layout. When I print a layout I always want it to go to the last printer that layout used, not the last printer the system used, not the last printer FM used. I have envelopes in the inkjet, letters in the laser, and membership cards in the Evolis Pebble3. Surely I am not the only FM user doing actual work where different items need to be printed for each entry?
As things stand I have FM scripted to produce the dialog box if printer is not the one the layout was expecting. Have not been successful at automating the Print... dialog box. And I shouldn't have to.

I practically assumed that either iLife or iWork would come out with a drawing program. I'm pretty surprised that there's no easy to draw something on a Mac.
Apple produces killer programs like iWeb and iMovie and Pages and Keynote where you can integrate all these cool graphics into your great-looking publications... but they pretty much lock you into only using barely-edited photos as your graphics, unless you start forking out lots of major cash.
Might not people want to put drawn items into these websites, movies, publications, and presentations?
P.S. For charting, OmniGraffle is pretty killer.

Lets be realistic here. THis is a NEW operating system. We cannot expect every single application ever written to be 100% compliant days BEFORE the actual release of the OS. SOme bugs may pop up, some incompatibility may arise. It is for that reason that many people who need all their apps to work 100% tend to wait a bit for the bugs/incompatibilities to be addressed and fixed.
As tot he question about drawing and photo programs. With the release of 10.4 and the COre technology Apple made it easier for people to be able to add many "Photoshop effects" to programs to help with small application development. There really isn't any cheapskate design software out there because there is no market for it. In the end why go cheap when you can invest a little more and have full power of say Photoshop which is an industry standard? It is not Apple's fault there is limited choices in this niche but more so that the consumer drives a market and the consumers are choosing "Pro Applications and Suites" to generate quality work. Sorry but if you want some shareware design software your either gonna have to hunt some down or write it yourself because that market segment is pretty much dead on the Mac side.
Filemaker is a subsidary of Apple yes. Does that mean that just because they are they should have 100% compliance BEFORE the release date of a New OS?
I think maybe the "fast food generation" has really taken hold where everyone wants it "their way right away." without being realisitic to what they are asking.
100% complaince to a new OS that has not officially even been released?
Photoshop / Illustrator programs for $9.95?
100% Bug free OS migration?
WHen things come back down to reality I think many people will realize that you are not FORCED to upgrade on Friday at 6:37pm so you can be the new cool kid on the block.
I would counsel a little patience and see what compatibility issues arise and bugs before I would install on a computer used for production.
I would rather be safe than sorry /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I've been very happy with Intaglio from Purgatory Design. I don't know if $89 is cheap by your definition, but it was well worth the price to me.

If anyone out there has v7 and will be installing Leopard, I'd like to know how it works. If it doesn't, I'll be really mad and not be upgrading to the new cat!

I can think of an excuse. Perhaps because of their close affiliation with Apple, they had access to some low level stuff that they based a ton of code on.
I doubt it. They try to be as cross platform as possible, so I don't think there's low level stuff that anyone else doesn't have access to.
There could be issues that popped up in later builds that they are working on.

You got to use the new features from version 5.5, 6, 7, 8, and 8.5 for several years - are you claiming that is not worth anything? The guy who didn't upgrade didn't get to use those features. Nobody forced you to buy the interim versions - you purchased them because you felt they gave you value for the money you spent. That fact that someone else who didn't get that value pays the same today for an upgrade is irrelevant.
Wow, the sense of self-entitlement is amazing. How about taking responsibility for your own actions instead of blaming others?
