FileMaker posted their notice last week. MacWorld just picked up on it today.

Thanks, Mycroft Holmes. I suppose I haven't been frequenting FM's site since I had not anticipated this being an issue at all. However, what's the defense for this FIleMaker statement:

We have not tested earlier (pre-FileMaker 9) versions of FileMaker software on Mac OS X Leopard and do not intend to release updates for earlier versions.

Come on. FM 9 is relatively new. Is there a really serious problem bringing versions minimally back to version 8 (or before) into compatibility with Leopard? Clearly, they don't appear willing to even address that. Everyone upgrade to FM 9 or forego Leopard. Maybe it's just me, but something seems wrong with that picture. FM succeeds in selling a few more v9 so that people can upgrade to Leopard. Of course, many won't be able to do that. All I know is that wouldn't happen if this were APPLE software!
Oh wait...

BUT NOW.... Now there is virtually NO entry-level graphics/painting softare available for the Macintosh platform.

You are gravely mistaken. How about DrawWell or Line Form, or even Create (pro level for a cheap price!)? There are lots, you just have to look for them.

I will accept your suggestions, along with those of others, as to alternative draw/paint programs, thanks. However, saying I'm "gravely" mistaken is perhaps a bit of an overstatement--though maybe in line with my own overstatement. Cheers! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I wish the FM people would revamp their engine. (SLOW) when accessing data compared to MySql

My professional scientific society now requires that posters be submitted in powerpoint format! Totally inappropriate, and yet there is nothing else within reasonable reach of most academic scientists.

That's still not an excuse - haven't these people ever heard of PDF? That way you can use Powerpoint, InDesign, Illustrator, or bloody Microsoft Word to design your poster - and then output it in a format that makes sense for printing posters, and doesn't tie people to a particular application.
It's damn frustrating though. My institution recently did exactly the same thing - a poster competition for academics, where the submissions were required to be in Powerpoint format. Zombies on a stick.

If Apple wants to get into the corporate market, they need to start behaving like they understand enterprise IT.

To be fair, does anybody understand "Enterprise IT"? Not even the "Enterprise IT" guys seem to - they just spout buzzwords. From what I can gather, it is about buzzwords, spending a lot of money, destroying producitivity and morale, and making users' lives miserable with really crappy applications.

It may be the last minute changes, especially to how the directory system works that is causing the delay. (Disk Warrior is in a similar bind). SInce changes were made up to that last minute almost they may have been waiting for the GM for the final changes they needed to make in order to be 100% compliant.

For what it's worth, I don't believe there were any last-minute changes to the directory system. The issues with DiskWarrior appear to be interface-related.
