Not the drive, the partition.

All non-Windows computer technicians should be in (or get in) the habit of saying "drive volume" which eliminates the confusion of "I don't have any partitions" from those who have never partitioned their hard drive.

There are a # of us out there with Leopard DVD's that can't get the thing to mount on the desktop at present to even consider an installation... Everything else is just icing on the cake or at least will be whenever I can get this thing installed.

If you tried the installation without the third party tablet and it still fails to boot from the DVD, I would strongly encourage you to return the DVD and ask for a full refund. By touching Apple's pocketbook, you will force them to leap on this problem like a duck on a June bug. Otherwise, they may put it on the back burner. No one should be wasting time in a discussion forum about an install disk that fails to install. Put this problem in Apple's lap. You can buy an improved version of the DVD in a few weeks when the fault is corrected by Apple.

I have the Family Pack and installed Leopard on my wife's MacBook first. Took the time to verify CD before installing hers as I figured it would only have to be done one time. Her MacBook was fast & simple with no problems.
Then I went to the iMac and had misery last night and half of today. Finally wised up and checked the Support posts and found that my Clear Dock & Application Enhancer was the problem. SOlved the problem on the iMac by doing an Archive & Install (under Options when you select the target disk) and the install went very smoothly.
Overall I love it, faster with some very useful features. Well worth the Family Pack price - especially as there are 5 Macs in the family!

i did the erase/install but it didn't work out so well. the install succeeded no problem. i used Migration Assistant and selected by SuperDuper clone that went fine as well..however, when all was said and done, none of my data from the transfer was in Leopard! my itunes, iphoto, address book, calendar, etc. were all empty! i know its somewhere there because the size of the hard drive was about the same but i couldn't find it anywhere...in other forums i've heard people use "Set Up Assistant". is this different from "Migration Assistant"? if so, how do I access "Set Up Assistant"?
also, my leopard home account was the same name as my tiger home acct. so migration assistant asked me to change it...could that have been the problem?
at the moment i reinstalled tiger from SD which is working fine...i want to redo the install and i want to do the erase/install again but i'm afraid i'll have the same problem...so i'm thinking of just doing either the upgrade or archive/install.
do you guys have any suggestions? any help is appreciated.

Just now upgraded my iMac and it too was only 35 minutes. I had APE installed on both machines, but no 'blue screen' problems for me (as has been reported in other news sources linking APE to the problem).

I got this e-mail from Unsanity today.
"We wanted to send out some information to our mailing list subscribers about Mac OS X 10.5 and Unsanity's Application Enhancer.
First and formost. Before you install Mac OS X 10.5, make sure you have Application Enhancer (APE) 2.0.3 or later installed. You can download it from http://www.unsanity.net/ape-203.dmg (the webpage is at http://unsanity.com/haxies/ape ).
Make sure you have APE 2.0.3 or later installed before you install Mac OS X 10.5. If you have an earlier version of APE installed before you install 10.5, you may exhibit one of the following symptoms upon booting into Mac OS X 10.5:
- Your goldfish may die.
- A strange dog might bite you on the street.
- A friend may punch you.
- Your computer may catch fire.
- Your loved one may leave you.
All of these things are really bad. So we urge everyone to make sure they have APE 2.0.3 or later installed. If you aren't sure, install APE 2.0.3 or later from the link above. APE 2.0.3 was released on March 14th, 2007. And please, always keep your software up to date.
A note about 10.5 and haxies:
As long as you have APE 2.0.3, nothing bad will happen in 10.5. Well, nothing we can control. However, none of your APE Modules will work either.
Developers in Apple's Mac OS X developer program (ADC) got the final 10.5 GM yesterday. We are still downloading the huge 6.66GB image and as soon as the downloads finish for our developers, we will be hard at work on making our software work on 10.5.
You can keep up to date with the status of haxies and 10.5 by viewing http://unsanity.com/.../compatibility/ and we will post more information as we have it on our blog at http://unsanity.org/ . Mac OS X 10.5 compatibility is currently our number one priority.
"If APE doesn't work in 10.5, shouldn't I just uninstall it?"
No, you should not. Just make sure you have APE 2.0.3 or later. A lot of third party (and Unsanity made) utilities depend on the APE framework itself being there. As it has some extremely useful functions. Removing it may cause these Applications and/or preference panes to stop launching.
For more information on Unsanity haxies, please visit:

I pre-ordered my copy and had it installed on my Powerbook G4 1.67 GHz by shortly after lunch on Friday. I am pleased to report that installation was totally uneventful. I should add that my system was pretty clean due to hard drive corruption forcing an erase and install a few weeks earlier.
The only thing I noticed after the upgrade was that a few connections changed, probably because Apple moved things, but none of those required more than a click or two to correct. For example SpamSieve needed its plugin reinstalling. I also went through and deleted all my old 10.4 folders to make things uniform.
On the whole I am very happy with the update. Although there are no killer apps for me (at this point), each application seems to have a little something extra that really improves productivity. The speed also seems pretty snappy, possibly more so than 10.4, but its always a matter of perspective.
I do like the new icons, they are quite classy. When you look at them in quick look they seem to have the texture of hand made paper. Once someone updates my icon program to match, I'll be all set!
The only downside seems to be STACKS. What idiot forgot to to add sub menus? As things stand it is completely and utterly useless. Worse still, in fan mode you cannot see all your folders, and it is virtually without options /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif I'm sure someone will find a work around, as they already have done for the dock and menu bar, although I quite like them.

If I use the erase & install option, and then migration assistant, will my files have the correct permissions?

Had lots of probs with getting stuck for hours half way, then decided, like a previous member, to do an Archive and Install, all went smoothly, 35 mins. Had APE, but latest version, and no blue screen.....
BUT... now my Superdrive doesn't mount or read, but loaded Leopard. ODD..
Sometimes has an error saying it's unreadable by this system, (iWork Disk) but it will burn to a blank disk, not not finish.
Going to call Apple Service today.
iMac G5 .. Carbon Copy Cloned - Thank goodness.

I used the erase and install (I had a complete bootable back up already done). The install took less than 16 minutes on my MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz. All my permissions transferred fine I used the transfer assistant to bring across 3rd party apps. I also have a .mac account so that also had a backup of my personal settings and keychain.
I've had absolutely no problems, Safari is lightning fast, I have time machine running on a second external drive. I had to bring across my iPhotos library to re-install photos and bring across my iTunes music library, other than that - effortless.
Cheers

Is it possible to make the backup without deleting the content on the drive? I keep my aperture masters on the external drive that I would like to use for my backup prior to installing leopard. My backup plan is to just backup my user directory as usual on to the drive and move forward from there.

In this case, you'd have to copy your Aperture files to another drive temporarily and partition your external drive. You can then restore your Aperture masters to one partition and use the other to clone your boot drive. Note that if the only copy of your Aperture files lives on your external drive, you have no backup for these files.
Backing up just your Home directory is fine for protecting your personal data, but doesn't help you restore your hard drive to its pre-upgrade condition if the Leopard installation goes awry. Without a bootable backup of your pre-Leopard hard drive, getting back to square one can be a long and painful process. Keeping an up-to-date bootable clone is cheap insurance, especially when you plan to install brand new software that has yet to be extensively tested in the field.

WARNING!
IF YOU OWN A SUPPORTED QUICKSILVER 867MHz POWERMAC G4, HOLD OFF ON INSTALLING LEOPARD OR AT LEAST BE VERY CAREFUL!
LEOPARD IS NOT FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH THIS MAC AND CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR FILES!

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is simply not compatible with any current new ATA hard drives for the Powermac G4 867Mhz tower, meaning it can't access anything beyond 128mb on ANY new hard drive. By now many owners of these have upgraded their hard drive like me to a much larger one. I realize this was the case with Tiger as well, but that was 2 years ago and a solution was provided. None is available for Leopard as I type this. How could Apple choose not to solve this problem after all this time??? This is inexcusable and an embarrassment to Apple. Leopard clearly is clearly not ready.
Why is this important? Well, because my upgrade to Leopard caused my ENTIRE MUSIC COLLECTION (stored on the last partition of my 250GB hard drive) TO DISAPPEAR! Yes, very scary. Of course, it was still there, but I have to boot into Tiger to use iTunes or even play any of my purchased music!
ANY ATTEMPT TO ACCESS THAT PARTITION IN LEOPARD WILL CORRUPT THE HARD DRIVE AND POSSIBLY DAMAGE THE DATA OR CAUSE ME TO LOSE MY ENTIRE MUSIC COLLECTION!
For this reason alone, I'm considering de-installing Leopard. Unbelievable flub on Apple's part with hard drive sizes ballooning so much in recent years. What a mess. What were they thinking???

You mean this THIRD-PARTY one? The one Apple never supported?

#1, it's not the same text, but the same idea
#2, you're wrong.

Intech ATI Hi-Cap is not supported in Leopard. See here.

Right. The same thing I linked. It's third party software. APIs change and go away. It's the third party vendors responsibility to maintain the product.
