I want to put a fresh system on my 20" 2.1 GHz G5 iMac 2.5 GB ram 250 GB HD.
Not Leopard just yet -- I want to re-install Tiger, but first I want to reformat the harddisk to get rid of all the garbage that's collected over the years (I've updated from os9 to Jaguar, Panther and Tiger -- all the time carrying old stuff with me).
I have a 250 GB Firewire external harddisk (plus a USB2.0 for backups) and plan to make a backup bootable copy before I erase the disk using Carbon Copy Cloner.
- After having erased the disk, I want to make sure that I can continue using Mail.app -- with all the old e-mails, including attachments,
- I also want to continue using applications -- preferably without having to copy them from original installation disks. Can I copy my application folder to the backup disk and then back again to the computer hd?
- I want to retain my key chain settings.
- And... basically I want to continue working as I do not now, just with a better functioning machine (I hope).
How should I go about it -- and what are the pitfalls?
I'd be grateful for suggestions!

When I upgraded to Leopard, I made a bootable clone of my MacBook, then used the Migration assistant to transfer everything over. My Mail, Address book, bookmarks, etc. are all as I left them. That's probably your best option.
Steps:
Erase and Install TIger using DVD
Once at Migration assistant, choose Volume on this Mac (if that finds nothing, choose from another Mac)
Wait the time to transfer, and you're back in business.
WIthin Migration Assistant, you can choose to install just your user folder or everything including Applications. Talk about pain free!

Interesting... I never knew I had Migration Assistant on my computer.
It asks me if I want to transfer from another Mac using Firewire -- I assume that would include an external disk with a system installed?
