I have an iPhone, and it is not hacked. I also use ATT... so I am a legitimate user. But I would like more details of what is being updated before I do it.
Not because I am afraid of something they did to thwart abused iphones, but because with the last update I got it cleared out my address book and luckily was able to pull it from a backup on another machine.
So, any first installers please let us know how it went, and if you still have your address book /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

No problems so far... and it didn't erase my custom ringtones.

Not such a great experience for me. It caused some usual nonsensical error code then required me to restore my iPhone losing all of my settings. I have not hacked or done anything to my iPhone. Thanks Apple! This may be the last time I "update" the software on this phone. I agree with an earlier post - Apple should let us know what future updates contain so I know if it will be worth the risk. I continue to be impressed with the high quality of Apple's software lately.

It tried to delete the Address Book on my local computer - I told it to cancel. Can I trade my phone in for a Blackberry? hmmmm.......

I have no problems; in fact, 1.1.2 fixed a problem I had under 1.1.1.
The update allows you to choose whether your default language is English, German, French, or Italian. Whichever language you choose, you get the corresponding keyboard layout, but you can mix and match as you please. You can set your "region format," that is, the format for dates and currency, to any one of 17 countries, including Botswana and Zimbabwe! You can select any combination of language, keyboard layout, and regional format you like. You can have a German-language iPhone with a US keyboard and Zimbabwean region format if you like.
I noticed a Developer setting under Safari under 1.1.1, that lets you turn a debug console on and off; that is still present.
The iPhone is unable to connect to an N-only WiFi network as before.
I think the main purpose of this update is to internationalize the iPhone and fix bugs along the way. It's worth it just for the bug fixes. I speak German, so for fun, I set my language to German, with the keyboard and regional settings set for the US. Fun!
I know this breaks some hacks, but that is a very good thing. Hacks exploit vulnerabilities in the system, so fixing the vulnerabilities always breaks hacks. You can't have it both ways; fix the vulnerabilities and leave them intact for hackers at the same time. The reason that Windows is such a mess is that Microsoft has so many legacy applications that hack the system that they have to try to support them. It's impossible. The reason that OS X is so wonderful is that developers obey the rules. Hacking is wrong; it is like breaking into a house, commandeering a back bedroom, and then demanding breakfast. With hacked system, every system update becomes a nightmare for the hackers' victims--er, customers. Do not hack your iPhone. Hackers, like people who insist on driving on the wrong side of the road, can only cause damage in the long run. Wait for the API and the legitimate, ethical developers who will use it. None of the hacks are so urgently necessary that you can't wait a couple of months for a legitimate program that does the same thing without breaking your system.
Oh, by the way, I don't like hackers, in case you didn't notice.

I am sensing the direction of the posts concerning this article will change radically away from the actual update to 1.1.2. I'll leave the opinions to others who don''t have to wake up at 4:30 am. Should be fun to read at least....

I think many users are disconnecting the iPhone too early. The update process does take longer than before but this IS a 160 meg download which is more than likely rewriting the entire OS. I've noticed that screen transitions appear to be much smoother than before, but that may be more due to the restart than the update. I'll keep it running for awhile to see if the smoothness of the animation persists.

I left mine connected until the main iPhone screen came back up and synching was complete. I was in no rush to disconnect realizing the entire OS was being updated. So that was definitely not what caused the error on my end.

I got the infamous "unknown error code (1602 or 4) when I tried to update, and it was persistent over several tries.
I called 800-MyiPone and got a very capable and pleasant young lady, Kelly, who guided me through the steps of trashing iTunes along with two system files, restarting the machine, downloading iTunes 7.5 and installing it, plugging in the iPhone, restoring it. It then went through the whole routine of installing the software and updating firmware. I'm now waiting for syncing after restoring from my backup.
It's been my experience over my 20+ years with Apple products that the company has always stood behind its products with skilled and sincere tech support staff.
I also think its Apple Care program has generous terms and is fairly priced, especially with its "no questions asked" bumper-to-bumper support for parts and labor, as well as generally quick turnaround.

Didn't you sync first? I don't understand how you can lose all your settings. When you restore, it returns you to the last sync. The one time it happened to me (for 1.0.2), I lost my youtube bookmarks but everything else was exactly the same as before the update.

After installing, there appears to be a problem with the control of the fuel pump... The engine sputtered and then stalled. This update was meant for the on board computer of a Toyota Corolla, wasn't it?

And this will likely always be the case for the current iPhones, as I believe they included only a/b/g hardware (i.e., no 802.11n).
