Jim [Dalrymple],
Bento looks interesting, but here is where Macworld could really help us readers.
Compare and contrast:
Entourage 2008 (http://www.macoffice2008.com/)
Contactizer (http://objective-decision.com/)
Daylite (http://marketcircle.com/)
"Nighthawk" (replacement for Now Up-to-Date Contact) (http://www.nowsoftware.com/nighthawkSubsite/index.html)
iGTD (http://bargiel.home.pl/iGTD/)
and others I don't even know about.
thanks,
dave

Dave:
Thanks, but this isn't the place for a comparison of different personal database products. Bento is just being publicly introduced today, and it's our job as the news guys to let you know that it's available.
But doing a shootout of different personal database software is certainly grist for the mill for our review editors and feature editors -- at least once Bento is done in January (we don't review software that isn't officially "final").

You had to know this was coming.
AppleWorks dead-ended, iWork gets Numbers, FileMaker great but too big. Something is missing.
I got the new Mac and was planning to upgrade most of my software. I was going with iWork to replace my AW apps that I have used for years. I downloaded FileMaker for a trial run but it was too much for what I needed. Boom - along comes FileMaker Jr.
Just downloaded the Trial and watched the video. I am 90% sold already!
Would like to know if I can import pricing from my suppliers though. Then it would really be huge for me.

I saw the "works with iPhone," and just about jumped out of my seat. If this creates a database that's modifiable on the iPhone, it'll push me over the edge. That's what I've been waiting for - along with a pile of money to get the associated MB Pro so I can run Leopard. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I've been hoping for a FIleMaker Jr. to be included in iWork, but can understand the need for an independent app. Very glad to see Bento and hope it does all we hope.
Downloading files to iPods and iPhone/touch would also be a major help in generating sales as will 3rd party efforts.

Good thinking, FileMaker was a mainstay in a past life, but overkill lately, Bento looks tasty ... interesting that the preview pages are more Apple than FileMaker > it certainly would fill out the iWork suite handily.
... where is the video?

The video comes when you download the trial. Just a short how-to on the basics.

I have been tickling address book for some time trying to but addresses into to pages via the zip code.
For mass Mailing to customers one has to ship via a zip code and Address Book only sorts by name.
Any preliminary viewing spot something in Bento that sort for mailing via the zip code.

as the wheel turns old becomes new again /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Once upon a tize there was an Apple app that was moved over to Claris called Clairis Organiser. This was a good home/SOHO database PIM app that was then sold to Palm and after a lengthy delay became the first Mac interface between Macs and Palm PDAs.
And now Apple has released Bento the product has gone full cycle. Hope it's a reliable and easy to use as Organizer!
