Hi
The optical drive adds a significant amount of noise, at least to older manufactured units. I didn't [mean to] argue that the PS3 is quieter than the 360. I was trying to say that I haven't talked to any 360 owner who uses one extensively that would use "loud" to describe the fan noise level. I've read the newer [BenQ] drives used in later models are notably less obnoxious but haven't confirmed. Now that M$ is using smaller manufacturing processes for the chips, it should help. I consider the Wii to be quiet, if not very quiet. Not silent but quiet / very quiet.

People forget that Microsoft rushed the X-Box to market. It did that to gain traction in users and in game development before Sony released the PS3. That seemingly worked, but it is paying for it now because there are design flaws in the system that probably are a result of insufficient hardware testing. The 360 also had software issues that took several months to work out when it came out.
Sony's hardware seems to be more solid, but it is a year behind Microsoft in terms of building a user base, having games made, working out the kinks in the software, and rolling out live gaming. I do not blame Sony for taking more time to come out with a better prodcut, as I think it has potential to be.
I do wish Sony would not have included the Blue-Ray player in at least tyhe entry level model. It did that, however, to push the format for selfish reasons. Namely, to win the licensing rights, and to push more restrictive DRM.

Don't forget that HD graphics take more space, if you did HD games on regular DVD you have to have shorter games or have to use multiple disks on games.
Example Heavenly Sword comes with 5 languages in the game and this audio data take 10+ GB on the disk and this is only audio no graphics and code.
Also if Sony have one PS3 with regular DVD and another with Blu-ray then have to be two version of games boxes one in DVD and one in BR. So not ideal for retail space.
