MS word (2004, v11.3.8) seems to randomly decide that it wants to eat up all my processor time (according to Activity Monitor), which also has the downside of heating my computer up a bit. I figure it's probably some ridiculous and unnecessary feature, and am hoping I can turn it off. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and/or how to make it stop?

If you're running an Intel machine, then it's probably because Word is running under Rosetta. Office 2004 was created for the PowerPC processors. I've noticed the same hogging issues with Word or any other office product, not to mention the apps run slower than they do on a G5.

Go into Word Prefs and try turning off the background features "Check Spelling As you Type" and "Check Grammar As you Type" and see if the CPU usage goes down.
