Set individual function keys?

On my MacBook Pro, F-keys 8, 9 and 10 are dedicated to controlling the keyboard backlight, which means that I must ether press 'fn' before hitting them if I want to evoke Explose or Spaces, or I must set all of the function keys to software functions, which means I must press 'fn' to change brightness and volume. I am perfectly content to let the system automatically adjust my keyboard backlight, so is there any way to set it so F1 through F7 perform the hardware functions (brightness, volume, etc) and F8 through F12 perform software functions (Expose, Spaces, etc)?

Can't you set your function keys to act like normal function keys via the system preferences? It works that way on my iBook.
