Google has updated its Google Maps application adding a new feature called “My Location.” While the new feature is available for many phones, Apple’s iPhone is not among them. more

Google Maps adds locator, but not for iPhone

While it would be cool to have this feature hit the iPhone, I gotta say: I'm not too impressed with the accuracy. 1000m=1km=0.61mi for those in imperial-measurement-using countries. That's better than a kick in the butt, but doesn't exactly make it really useful for street navigation or anything.

I think this is a useful feature if what you want is simply to locate services in your surrounding area. I often use Google Maps on my iPhone in place of yellow pages, and it would speed things up to not have to enter a starting location, or know your zip code, etc., though better accuracy would help for actual navigation.
In my view, a really useful feature would be to be able to tap a point on the map and use it as a starting or ending location for navigation. This would take advantage of the iPhone's touch screeen functionality and avoid a lot of unnecessary typing.

That would be good.
My GPS that I use when I go off-road dirtbiking has a feature that is kind of like that. Not touch screen of course but all it does is have an arrow that points in the direction that the destination is - I have to find the trail or route to get me there. If I go too far off to the right the arrow just points towards the left etc. No turn-by-turn-navigation in the back country!
