I found that the virus programs are constantly doing one of two things. When you restart Parallels, the virus software begins scanning your folders, or two, the software is constantly updating because there is a new virus on the PC every ten minutes.
This results in your Mac hard drive spinning and rattling away endlessly. On my real PC, I find the AV software consumes up to 30 percent of my CPU power, so I turn it off when I play games. I keep it turned off on the Mac Parallels, because it makes it unusable. Using Parallels on the Mac is for convenience only. I wouldn't trust it to run browser or email or use unsafe files. This is why I use a Mac in the first place.
The whole idea of running antispyware and antivirus software on a PC emulator on a Mac makes my head spin.

Perhaps more importantly (for current Parallels users) - Leopard Update Build 5582 is out, following a couple of Betas and a RC.

If a virus appears in your Windows session every ten minutes, it's only because you are downloading numerous files from every dubious web site imaginable. Most anti-malware tools under Windows allow the user to configure them for their CPU usage and for whether they conduct full scans of the hard drive or volume upon every boot or only upon the detection of new files.

I'd rather choose my own protection software... I like Avast the best, and it's free for home users.

I think he meant PCs in general, not his PC specifically.

Didn't previous "non-Premium" versions of Parallels include Kapersky Internet Security for free?
My version of Parallels (Build 5160) has an "Install Kapersky Internet Security" item in the Action menu. Is that removed in the new "non-Premium" builds? Will previously installed versions of Kapersky still work in the new build of Parallels?
More importantly, how does the new build of Parallels work with Spaces and Leopard generally? Build 5160 has a few kinks in that department. I'd just upgrade and take a look, but I've had serious problems after upgrading Parallels in the past - bad enough that I've considered migrating to Fusion instead.

If I am forced to us A/V software in my Parallels virtual machine, I will quit using Parallels. I only use Windows in Parallels for tasks that HAVE to be done in Windows. I do not load any anti-spyware or AV software, because as one of the previous posters remarked, it slows the machine down to an unusable halt.
I dont like the fact that Parallels mounts the windows drive in Mac and I have to manually disconnect it all the time... if they force me to use their spyware protection and AV protection (which I hope they dont) I will be dumping parallels, despite how much I like it.

Why not just use Bit Defender by Intego? It's the best anti-virus out there for Parallels users. It's well worth the $29. But, I guess it's around $100 if you get the Premium or you buy Parallels and BitDefender. Believe me! You DEFINITELY need an anti-virus program on Windows XP even if you are running it under Parallels on a Mac. Don't tell me you use different passwords for Windows XP. That would be smart, but let's face it. Just get Bit Defender or the Premium Parallels.
Last night, I just loaded up the horrid Internet Explorer, and I didn't even down any files, and BitDefender quarantines twenty something viruses - some of them trojans. Man, how insane is that? I'm glad I run OS X as my native OS! Wow!
