What was the grey box that had something fall out of it (looked kinda like a hard drive tray?), and Steve picked it back up and shoved it in?

It was exactly what you thought, a RAID array. It's not an Apple product IIRC, just an example he was showing of what people have built for the Mac.
Personally I love the fact that he admits he doesn't know what predictive branching or adaptive semantics are. He's not supposed to get bogged down in that stuff because users aren't supposed to get bogged down in it. Having Bill Gates up there acting like he knows every detail of every gate of every chip just makes the learning curve seem steeper.
Didn't he also toss a Rockr?
