Let me start by saying I love Apple. I bought the 128K Mac and Imagewriter in 1984. I have a computer science degree and worked as a technical editor for Ziff-Davis's Digital Review and I wrote several editorial length reviews for the old MacUser in the early 1990's.
Enough of establishing my street cred...
I have built a website specifically to generate product suggestions for Apple's iPhone. It is at www.hwuwt.com (Hey, What's Up With That?). Here are my top 10 (all software related which are the easiest to fix as opposed to hardware mods such as GPS, etc.).
These are the things that just drive me nuts:
1. Messages not downloading fully to the device
2. Looking up a contact requires you know their name
3. Lack of search
4. The universal "no cut and paste"
5. Contacts is not a main menu item and is hidden in the phone unlike iPod Touch
6. Sluggish performance with my 2,000+ contacts (sluggish when trying to enter an e-mail address to
send to.
7. Limit of number of e-mails that can be stored on the device.
8. No link between appointments and contacts
9. Non-linear battery remaining display (why does it go from 20% to 10% in no time flat?)
10. No ability to increase the size of text e-mails substantially.
Well, that's my list to add to the forum.

The 10 reasons I hate my iPhone

I have a lot of the same frustrations. Most of them are based in the Mail app.
When you get the "message not downloaded from server" message. I mean, download it! If anyone knows how to force download it, I would love to know. It's happened a few time where I have left my computer at home because I had the information needed in an email, only to have this message appear.
Trying to delete the 30 + spam messages from my work account every morning. Deleting one by one, and to make it worse, my iPhone constantly is checking for more mail so it has to think and think and it messes up my deleting rhythm.

Hate is a pretty harsh word. If you hate, why do you use? ;-) Go someplace else and publish a list of loves.
Unless you simply meant "things I wish Apple would fix on my iPhone."
If that's the case, yes, I can agree with just about all of them. Having said that, I would buy it all over again, knowing these "faults" exist. I love it that much. It doesn't make me "hate."
I have a quesiton regarding your number 2. Not who and where he is or anything like that. But what do you mean looking up a contact requiring you to know their name? What's the point in looking up a contact if you don't know their name to begin with? Do you randomly go through your contact list searching for someone who as of yet has remained unidentified? I'm going to email (or call, or ship via postal for that matter) Joe Smith. I reach for my phone, scroll through contacts (or easier yet, he's already in my favorites), locate Smith, and call (email, or mail). Are you looking for another way to locate someone besides their name? Maybe their company? I thought that at first, but then realized when it comes to companies, I have them listed by their company name in my contact list, which is thrown in alphabetically with the names of people in my contact list. Maybe you meant a "search" type of locating someone. If so, that should get lumped in with number 3 - lack of search.
Only other thing I can't agree with you on is the sluggishness. Maybe me only having about 300 contacts has something to do with that huh? I'm not doubting you, just saying I don't see it.
Other than that, your list is the usual suspects. On the other hand, I can honestly say I am more happy with my iPhone with all these shortcomings than I was with my Newton (this might top my iPhone if not for the size), Palm Pilot Pro, Palm III, Palm IIIx, Palm m515, Axim X50, and LifeDrive. I've been around the block a couple times when it comes to my PDAs. ;-)

I just want the iPhone not to lose sent messages! For example, I sent an e-mail message (where the iPhone produced the whoosh sound when sending), but it apparently never made it thru to the recipient(s) (which is a mailing list I belong to: it was obvious it didn't come thru, as it never showed up in my inbox). Oddly enough, the message never made it to my SENT folder either, so the message simply vaporized from the iPhone. Goofy....
I've also had a number of Safari freezes, bringing the iPhone to a halt requiring a hard restart. I've had missed calls show up 30 minutes after the caller tried, and for reasons unknown to me the phone never rang (and NOT due to be out of range, or surfing, etc). The calls never made it to me, which is a bit alarming as I'm often "on call" with the iPhone as my primary contact number! I cannot use it, if I cannot trust it!
All a bit disappointing, to be dealing with this stuff almost six months after launch: this kind of instability is acceptable in a Rev. O device, but these issues really should've been addressed by this point in the O.S. development. And yes, I'm running 1.1.2.
Frankly, I wish Apple spent less time worrying about unlockers, etc, and more time working out bugs in the O.S. that make it unreliable for basic functionality.
