Hi
My first MB was a white ( original Core Duo series ) and my current unit ( of the last generation running @ 2.16GHz ) is a black version. Glossy white was nice and iconic but the matte black finish seems very 'rich' to me. I like it. While it can show skin oils more in the fact that the oils make a shinier spot on the matte finish, the white can get discolored. I clean my electronics often, so it doesn't really make a big difference for me. Apple does charge a premium for the color though. Photos don't do justice but I grabbed a few with my cell phone in case it helps. Posted Image Posted Image http://forums.macworld.com/legacyimages/Photo0070.jpg

Because of mostly a lack of space, a laptop is the direction I'm going
in. However, after looking at the mid-level Macbooks and the baseline
Macbook Pros, I have found myself in a rut. Which fits my own needs
better?

The MacBook will definitely play WoW, while the MacBook Pro will play WoW better. The MacBook is excluded from playing a lot of modern games, frankly, all because of that damnable integrated graphics chip. WoW is a notable exception. The game's system requirements are lower, so they've been able to cast a much wider net.

Personally, I would go with a MacBook Pro if I had the budget and the choice -- the smaller size isn't worth the limitation to me. But I play a lot of games. If WoW is all that you play and all that you plan to play, then you'll probably be well off with a MacBook.

Good deal. It looks like I will be going with the Macbook after all. Either way, I'm going to way until after MWSF before making my final decision. The size difference (from 15" to 13") doesn't really bother me, the only game I consistently play is WoW (360s will do that to you), and it's a much cheaper price.

On the other hand, color still is going to be the final decision. Has the white discoloration issue been solved by Apple now that they have acknowledged that it exists?

I have the second gen Core 2 Duo white MacBook and I have experienced no discoloration at all.

Very nice. And how have BlackBooks coupled with the MagicEraser things been turning out? Anyone from that department dropped in?

Hi
I've read no issues with the black MBs...Anyone care to throw out a link?

I want to clarify on my discoloration comment. I didn't mean to reference the defective palmrests on early MB units but rather the regular discoloration from usage ( skin oils, ... ). I've seen it on Dells, Gateways, ... as well. For example, I've seen many of iBooks with what I consider disgusting looking palmrests, trackpads ( touchpads ), and keyboards. I can't find any good pictures of one using Google, maybe because no one wants to show how dirty / careless they are and it isn't something they can blame on others ( Apple )...ala MacBook.

For me a big advantage of the MacBook Pro is the metal casing; it isn't as susceptible to fingerprints, grease marks and discolouration.

When the black MacBooks came out I went to check them out at the Apple store and couldn't believe how many fingerprints and oily stains it had accumulated. It may look cool out of the box but if I had to choose I would go with the white, especially considering that the black sells for a premium.

But don't the Macbook Pros have a problem with dented cases and the slot-loader bending in?

The only trouble I've seen with cases getting dented or the slot-loader tray getting stuck is if the case is warped because of abuse (intentional or unintentional). I mean, if you drop a MacBook Pro hard on its edge, it's going to get banged up. Is that better that breaking in a plastic case? You be the judge.

I have heard that the MBP's casing is more prone to dents. Of course if you take reasonable care of it this shouldn't be an issue; the magsafe connectors prevent Apple's newer laptops from crashing to the floor every time someone trips over the cord.

I haven't heard about the slot-drive thing. What I do know is that my MBP suffers from an intermittent keyboard failure and that a similar problem has been experienced by other MBP owners.

I've heard that has a lot more to do with Leopard than it does the MBPs. I'm already going to be using XP Pro with Boot Camp; I'd hate to have to start off with Tiger...

i play WoW a LOT on three machines:
* my original black macbook pro 2.0 Ghz, with 1.5 GB of RAM, which i bought new for $1500 and is my main computer
* my iBook G4 1.25 Ghz, with 756 Mb of RAM, which i bought factory refurbished years ago for $1100, and
* my son's dell inspiron 9300 2.0 Ghz, with 1 GB of RAM and an nVidia 6800 go video card with a 256 MB cache, running XP media edition, which i bought used for $700 from ebay in october.
forget the iBook: it's practically useless about 50% of time. it never achieves more than 25 fps and typically spends its time around 5 to 10 fps. i can use the auction house ok, but questing is a huge pain, and pvp is simply not going to happen.
but the comparison between the dell and the macbook is instructive. i not only play both computers frequently, my son and i often sit side by side at the dining room table with them, so i watch them in action against each other constantly. on the macbook, all the video and sound options in the game are reduced to the lowest values possible to maximize performance. on the dell, it's the opposite. all the options (shaders, lighting effects, texture effects, reverb, sound channels, etc.) are pushed out to the max.

even so, the $1500 macbook is simply AWFUL in comparison with the $700 dell.

after 2 months of playing on these machines next to each other, neither of us still can resist commenting with incredulity on, and laughing at, how utterly abysmal the macbook's performance is, when judged against the dell. (i say that as an apple loyalist since my 1979 [apple II]. my main computer has always been a mac, since they were invented, and still is.) "your macbook can't even see that building in the distance? OMG! you can't even tell that its RAINING!!! and i'm seeing the individual water drops bouncing off the ground!!"

playing with the dell is like playing with glasses on. playing with the macbook is like playing with uncorrected 20/200 vision. the macbook, even with all settings minimized, has never gotten more than 35 fps. it usually gets in the mid 20s. last night, though, and this is not uncommon, it spent most of the night between 15 and 20 fps, a frame rate which most pc gamers would consider unplayable, though i play acceptably all the time.

the dell, even with all 3D-rendering settings maxed out, rarely falls below 50 fps and usually plays around 70 fps.

if i increase only one or two of the 3D-rendering settings for the macbook even slightly, then the frame rate drops to truly unplayable levels (below 10 fps). the idea of maxing them out, as i always do with the dell, is laughable.

i would LOVE to have a new macbook pro for WoW. i'm sure its performance would match the dell's. but frankly, i can't afford the $2000. i guarantee you that i'll be buying myself another used dell (or hp or asus) laptop for $700 or so, just for WoW purposes, as soon as i can afford it. (i can't keep borrowing my son's.)

if your choice is between the macbook and the macbook pro, and you want to play WoW (let alone any other GPU-intensive games), definitely buy the pro. you won't regret it. but if money is tight, buy a used pc with a good graphics processor for a few hundred bucks from ebay. you won't regret that either.

I can tell you from first-hand experience. This isn't unique to MacBook Pros, as it happened to my aluminum-clad 17-inch PowerBook G4. The bottom line is that if the case flexes badly enough -- in this case, bent from a sharp fall that landed it on an edge -- it can warp slightly, which will prevent CDs or DVDs from easily ejecting. It was simple enough to fix -- just flexing it back did the trick -- but if you're unaware of what's causing the problem, it can be quite scary.

Yes, but it only seems to affect the MacBook Pro. Weird ?:|

Hopefully the problem will be fixed by a future update.
