Everyone's entitled to an opinion about the redesign, and I'm glad people are vocal about it. But one thing I don't understand about the folks who are complaining about not being about to read news. What's wrong with just bookmarking the news page if that's what you're interested in, and using that instead?

I understand that the new home page doesn't have the list of all recently posted news items on it displayed as prominently as the old one. I'm just having a hard time figuring out why going to that news page isn't a viable solution.

Peter,

I hope you do take this as constructive criticism, I'm not complaining as you said, but you answered your own question. I found the "old" site easier to check the news.

I'm not saying I don't login and checkout threads hoping I'll learn something (which I have) or maybe on a chance I help someone else.

The tab I have set is macworld.com, then I go from there.

But Respectfully, saying I'm complaining is dead wrong. And because Safari isn't fully functional I'm now using FF.

I hope this clears my post up and your thought process.

No need to try to be diplomatic, PeterG. When it comes to the site redesign, I'm as much of a bystander as you are. I'm responsible for writing articles, but I'll leave it to others here at Macworld to decide what's working and not working with the redesign.

But again, what I'm not understanding is why people are not happy with the news page. Does it have something or not have something that people are looking for? I just don't get it.

Peter, I agree that, for those who want news, the News page should be the destination. For those of us who are here because we stuck with MacCentral, the News page is like a reincarnation of the MacCentral page. However, there are some inconsistencies that I think would make the news page a better news stop.

For example, I would gladly trade the the space given to article descriptions for more headlines "above the fold." Also, the "All" list of headlines should tell where certain articles came from, a la the front page "all" list (MacGems, Mac OS X Hints, Mac911, etc.). Please also bring back the red headlines for the most read stories.

There is no arguing that the contributions of writers like you is why readers value Macworld. However, the website design serves as our interface with your content. There is also no arguing that a design that wastes the reader's time because he has to hunt for content that used to be at his fingertips gives the reader an excuse to look elewhere for news content.

Merry Christmas All,

Peter,

You keep answering your own thought by sounding confused. And I'm pretty sure your not.

"But again, what I'm not understanding is why people are not happy with
the news page. Does it have something or not have something that people
are looking for? I just don't get it."

I guess I'm not the only one, who is thinking this way. (from your own words) "people are not happy".

Yes, I am being diplomatic (trying) because I don't want to sound...............

OK, you go check when I've complained (I haven't), or abused the design of Macworld before this change (I haven't). I've offered "my" thoughts comparing this site to the old site. I would think you (Macworld) would think outside the box, and welcome any and all criticism.

I don't know the cost and time thats been put into this project, but I'll bet they don't want to give it up, at any cost.

Now go figure what I was saying........

Peter

MacCheetah3, the forums should be working fine in windows. I think you can't see the reply and actions because you are not logged in. They SHOULD be there regardless, this is a UI issue with the jive boards that we're working on. So log in and let us know if you're still not seeing them.

Hi Jason,

I'm sure the red headlines will help.

But.......

Have you ever been to a party/bar/function and everything seems bland, then all of a sudden some very attractive person comes in and every one takes time and looks.

I guess thats what I'm saying here. I would hit the Macworld tab a lot to check out the news, the forum but "to me" I have to look instead of being knocked over by whatever in whatever. I use googles news as my home page check all sorts of stuff then if something hits me in the tech section I would then hit Macworld to see what is happening.

It's been suggested to tag the news, I open that page and "my" eyes go to the red "ALL" the CAMERAS. I think I'm in the products section.

I'm not trying to make a big deal out of this but it's just the way my simple little brain works.

The presentation of news on the News Page is gummed up by extraneous text that makes scanning of titles a chore, and limits the number of listed stories. It is fussy and annoying and besides, is this where all new content is presented or just a subset?

There is no equivalent to "Latest Stories" or an elegant presentation of news anywhere on the new site. What's interesting is the number of different posters who are voicing the same complaint, just in different ways.

This is the worst redesign of a major site I have ever seen. The design of the new site essentially walls you off from us. You might as well be writing in a little room with no windows for all the help the new site gives you in reaching us and us in reaching you.

It is a mess and a shame. It is joyless and confusing. It is painfully derivative without any of the elegance or utility from the sites it emulates.

What mystifies me most is how an organization comprised of expert evaluators is unable to evaluate their own. At a time when Apple is burgeoning, and with an excellent stable of talent and expertise to leverage, you should own this space, not relinquish it.

I came across a member with username ["Nobody"|~66563] who has over 58000 posts to his / her name since October of this year! :0
Could this be where all of our missing posts have gone? ?:|

Hi
Don't I feel silly. It was that, I should have double checked. I thought I did successfully log in but it would appear that I was mistaken. I'm posting this from Safari in Windows XP. :) Thanks.

Time to tap into Nobody's account and reverse the flow! Quick! ;)

Could just be a new term for "Anonymous" from when anonymous posting was still allowed.

I wonder if he's related to Not Me? He's responsible for a lot of the shenanigans that happen around my house, according to my kids.
