As a novice iMac user I tried to install my application so I could send and receive faxes some months ago. Despite the help application I ran into problems and gave up in despair. Now trying again I can find various FAXstf files on the system but no installer and when I click on any of the FAXstf files, nothing happens. Can anyone point me in the right direction? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Forget about FaxSTF. I have seen very few people that have managed to get it to work properly.
You could give Page Sender a try. It works as if it were a printer, just print your document to it and get sent through your modem.

I just switched from a PC to an iBook and I find it strange that there is no built in fax/modem with OSX. Seems to me that this has been built in to PCs for several years now - wonder why macs don't have it?
Anyway, I think I'll try downloading the Page Sender software you recommended...

Ah ha, I now see that faxSTF is the built in fax - However, I gather from your posts that the program leaves something to be desired...
I'm going to take STF for a test run before I buy Page Sender...

Has anyone tried Cocoa eFax (a shareware Cocoa eFax ?
I'm ready to try Page Sender per your suggestions, and hope to be able to fax scanned documents/images.

I am using FaxSTF without problems. You need to apply a patch available from their website though. Otherwise, you would have problems getting it to work with OSX. I have an iBook running on 10.2.3. iBooks DO come with a built-in fax modem!

For sending faxes from your computer under OS X, check out:
Page Sender ($30)
http://www.smilesoft...pagesender.html

Cocoa eFax ($10)
http://www.macadvoca...m/cocoaefax.htm
Fax Elite. (free public beta for OS X, there is already an excellent OS 9 version)

http://www.faxelite.com/osx.php
CoMa X
http://Hartmann.aax.de/
(Scroll down to english link in left column)

4-Sight Fax (For Networks Only)

Hyla Fax

For receiving faxes, it is far less than optimal to use a modem and fax software, as they don't work well and they tie up your phone line and your computer. What I recommend instead is that you sign up for one of the free Web/eMail fax services. They give you a free fax phone number for people to send faxes to you to, and then the fax is received by you as an eMail attachment. So, you don't even have to have your computer on when the fax is sent to you. Check out:

FaxWave/CallWave is free:

Many folks like JFax:

There is also FaxAway:
http://www.faxaway.com/
and eFax (though they do their best to hide the fact that you can still get their basic service for free):

Yes, I am using Cocoa eFax and fully satisfied. As noted by others receiving fax on your computer ties up your phone line, creates problems if you have answering system on, or if the computer is sleeping. I use eFax for receiving faxes through email. The free service is adequate for my purpose though eFax is bent upon convincing you to subscribe to their paid services.
The combination of Cocoa eFax for sending and eFax for receiving works great.

I like faxSTF, but I do NOT like that it sends the cover page every time! There is NO way to turn this off! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
other than that, its a good program.
Looks like efax is pretty nice.... page sender, to me, was a bit more complicated to use. imho.

I bought Pagesander because I don't have a phone line and want to send faxes through e-mail and my cable connection. I didn't realize I would have to pay $9.95 for efax a month to use Pagesender through e-mail and a cable modem?
Is there a better and cheaper way?
Thanks, Joer

I spent a lot of time struggling with both the System 9 and OS X versions of FAXstf. I don't know which is more amazing: that Apple would give us such lousy programs, or that Apple wouldn't give any instructions, not even telling us what they are for.
You don't need an installer for the OS X version -- it's already installed, though there's no way you could know that until someone tells you. I followed the pdf. manual with meticulous care and I successfully sent a fax, but there was no way to join more than one page together in one fax, which is pretty stupid. I used the default cover sheet which has space for adding a typed note, but then it only transmits the first two lines of what you typed, stopping in midsentence.
If you send faxes at all frequently, it's probably worth it to spend some money on one of the programs others are recommending. I won't do that because I only send one or two a year. If you're like that, I recommend using the System 9 version of FAXstf. There are plenty of problems and it will take you some time to work your way through the manual, but it is a lot more flexible, letting you combine pages in one fax so you can supply your own cover, and so on. It even allows you to type or add art work directly on the document after it has been formatted for faxing. And it does work, at least most of the time.

Just go to Cover Page when the option window appears (select internal modem as the printer when running STF), and uncheck the box that says 'Include Cover page'.
