You could give Page Sender a try. It works as if it were a printer, just print your document to it and get sent through your modem.

For receiving faxes, it is far less than optimal to use a modem and fax software, as they don't work well and they tie up your phone line and your computer. What I recommend instead is that you sign up for one of the free Web/eMail fax services. They give you a free fax phone number for people to send faxes to you to, and then the fax is received by you as an eMail attachment. So, you don't even have to have your computer on when the fax is sent to you. Check out:
FaxWave/CallWave is free:

Many folks like JFax:

There is also FaxAway:

and eFax (though they do their best to hide the fact that you can still get their basic service for free):

Yes, I am using Cocoa eFax and fully satisfied. As noted by others receiving fax on your computer ties up your phone line, creates problems if you have answering system on, or if the computer is sleeping. I use eFax for receiving faxes through email. The free service is adequate for my purpose though eFax is bent upon convincing you to subscribe to their paid services.
The combination of Cocoa eFax for sending and eFax for receiving works great.

other than that, its a good program.
Looks like efax is pretty nice.... page sender, to me, was a bit more complicated to use. imho.

You don't need an installer for the OS X version -- it's already installed, though there's no way you could know that until someone tells you. I followed the pdf. manual with meticulous care and I successfully sent a fax, but there was no way to join more than one page together in one fax, which is pretty stupid. I used the default cover sheet which has space for adding a typed note, but then it only transmits the first two lines of what you typed, stopping in midsentence.
If you send faxes at all frequently, it's probably worth it to spend some money on one of the programs others are recommending. I won't do that because I only send one or two a year. If you're like that, I recommend using the System 9 version of FAXstf. There are plenty of problems and it will take you some time to work your way through the manual, but it is a lot more flexible, letting you combine pages in one fax so you can supply your own cover, and so on. It even allows you to type or add art work directly on the document after it has been formatted for faxing. And it does work, at least most of the time.
