Reinstall to use Altivec?

Hi!
Sorry, I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't find it with the search function:
I about to replace the G3-card in my Umax S900 with a Sonnet Crescendo PCI G4/800, and I would like to know if I have to reinstall my systems (10.2.3 and 9.1) to make full use of the G4 (Altivec). And if yes, in the case of OS X, can I just install on top of the old installation, or do I have to make a completely fresh install? Thanks for your help!

Reinstalling your system software is not necessary, although some people say you should do it whenever you do anything "new" to the computer. I never hurts, except for the time involved. There is some software that came with your Crescendo card that you'll need to install to utilize the Altivec and enable your new cache. Other than that, you should be up and running in minutes. Of course, if anything goes wrong or turns flaky, you can always reinstall your system some other time.
