Compilations folder in iTunes Music Folder

Very wierd iTunes quirk I just discovered. I'm pretty positive I'm getting an iPod for my birthday tomorrow and I've been making mp3's like a madman. I was going through my iTunes folder in my home directory and came upon a folder called Compilations. In it were a bunch of folders with mp3's I had recently created. Some of the folders were soundtracks, but some were actually albums by artists, except their own folders weren't created. Now, I've ripped CD's before that were soundtracks and whatnot and iTunes created the necessary folders under the correct artists. Why would it be selective now? Why would iTunes do this? I'm kind of particular and would like to keep my music folder as organized as possible. Anyone have any thoughts out there? Thanks in advance.

There is a mp3 tag called Compilations. In iTunes select a song from the Compilations Folder then from File Menu do a Get Info. In the "Tags" you will see a button for "Part of a Compilation". If you uncheck that tag for all songs in the Compilations folder, iTunes will automatically delete that folder.

Biggs311, to clarify: It doesn't matter whether you downloaded the MP3s or ripped them from CDs. The track data is not on the CDs. When you put your CD in, the only way iTunes knows the names is because it went and looked up the CD on the Internet. If your computer is somehow finding the names while it isn't hooked up to the Internet, then I could be confused about how it works.
