I ordered my setup Tuesday morning the minute I heard the news. The display arrived Wednesday, the computer arrived today. Also, I two 500GB SeaGate 7200.11 HD's with 32MB of Cache Buffer came today as well. More RAM will come later, even though the 2GB it came with seem to be enough. It's a dual 2.8 Quad Core. I popped the drives in and set it all up today.
This machine is freaking awesome. I am having a blast!

smart! I am all fer it! why not turn a giant monitor into the world's largest iPhone screen?
by the way - any takers to my question about whether the $800 Apple RAID card is the only game in town? Is there another RAID card made by someone else that will do the job, hopefully for less than $800? (I have a lot of experience with RAID, but mostly of the software, disk utility variety, have never used a PCI RAID card.)

I've not paid any attention to them because it is not anything I'm likely to ever use, but www.xlr8yourmac.com has had a number of user reports on third party RAID set ups with Macs. You could start your research there if no one is able to help you here.
Btw, almost any pro level Mac with an ATi card from about the past 3 to 4 years has been able to support rotating monitors (my Powerbook does and that is nearly 4 years old). If your monitor can rotate, then your Mac can support it.

Graphos says
"My G5 is currently rendering an image since Sunday. It's about 3/4 done and I estimate that it will be done tonight."
I would like to help our worthy contributor and I am sure that many think the same way.
If about 1000 of us contribute $5 or $10 dollars each, we could enable Graphos to buy two more of the new machines and to be able to get his work done in a reasonable working day.
Does any one know of an easy and reliable way to achieve this?
Bravo for Graphos!

I think @ $10 dollars a pice, and it would only take 300 of you guys to help me out. I do need more RAM so thanks a lot tomtom for setting this altruist venture for me.
I have just one question thou, where in my post did I ask for donations? Oh, I get it. You are gust one of those generous souls that simply come to the aid of a fellow human being. I guess you miss read my post thou. All I wanted to state is that it's probably time for ME to upgrade with our without you're help. This model of Mac brings enough to the table as far as performance to justify the cost. But if you want to help, thanks!

Believe me, I do not wish to be condescending; charitable perhaps.
I was very touched that you had to leave your Mac running for two days in order for it to do what it has to do. I wanted to bring this to the attention of most mortals like myself who rarely have the opportunity to comprehend that there are real life tasks such as yours which have to be done in the normal way of working,
Take care.

well since we're all yapping about stuff we'd LIKE to see, here's my 2 cents.
design the monitors to rotate from landscape to portrait, and include the specific card to allow for this feature in the config available from mac.

You might be able to pick up a Radius Pivot on eBay.

> {quote:title=}{quote}My one question about the new configuration -- memory.
Anyone know a a third party vendor that is selling or has announced a shipping date for 800 MHz DDR2 ECC FB-DIMMs? In the previous Mac Pro they were 667 MHz DDR2 ECC FB-DIMM
I'd like to make a price comparison.
Thanks!

I just order a 2.8Ghz 8-core Mac Pro w/ NVIDIA 8800 video card and some other goodies. Currently I await delivery (3-5 weeks seem excessive to me). Anyway, when ordering I opted to go with third party memory since the option for 4GB from Apple seemed high. Unfortunately, I have to wait for a week before pricing is available so I couldn't buy any. Through the Kingston rep I heard that they will be anouncing their new 800MHz DDR2 ECC FB-Dimms within the week and because it has not been announced, there currently is no pricing available. I anticipate that their memory will be ready before I receive my computer and it has to be less than on Apple's online store.

This 'Cat' speaks to a very solid question dear to many. For those of us who switched from a fairly well equipped PC to the iMac G5 (20" 2.1 processor) have felt a little handicapped by the inability to use more than one monitor (independent) and upgrade graphics to normal gaming level WITHOUT jumping into a $3000 machine. Visited the Apple Store in San Francisco (best toyland I've been in) but at lower levels of Mac Pro the top iMac seems faster.
