These Apple TV improvements were inevitable. Very cool, but no mention of software upgrades or firmware upgrades for existing Apple TV owners. Does anyone know if we will be able to update older Apple TVs to the new format?

Someone goofed - this is the same story for the piece titled "Apple introduces Itunes Movie Rentals".

I guess Apple is no longer calling Apple TV a hobby.

With the price drop, the rentals, the wireless and the direct store connection, this is much more tempting than the original version.

Perhaps...

Steve did say that existing Apple TV boxes will get a software update. There is no new hardware.

Yeah, that's how I'm seeing it. The Apple TV hardware has not changed, but the movie rental features and new GUI will come about through a firmware update.

So if you have an existing Apple TV, it looks like you're invited to the party!!

you don't have to wait for it in the mail, or drive to movie rental store to get it... but you have to wait "... within 30 days of their DVD release." Huh?

I haven't seen the full keynote for myself yet, but according to the MacRumors live keynote transcript:

"10:00 am The new Apple TV is a free software update."

Such is the price of availability. For Apple to get all studios on board, especially Universal, this would seem to be the concession they made. We'll have to wait 30 days after the public release of the DVD to be able to download it from iTunes. In a way, it stinks but considering the 800 lb. gorilla named Wal-Mart and its turf-protecting tactics, I guess it was inevitable.

But that's not to say that once Apple (again) proves the worth of the iTunes model that studios won't adjust their minds. As we've seen in the past, it usually takes just one major studio (not including Disney!) for the rest to quickly follow suit.

I'm pretty anxious for all of this!!
