That's my primary gripe. I can get a Macbook with an optical drive and a larger HDD for the for the same amount. I'm sure a lot of people will snatch these things up, and kudos to Apple for at least going for it, but i really don't see it getting very popular. I could be wrong though...

"and by tomorrow, Greenpeace will take full credit for all this."
Greenpeace is no longer relevant anymore. Right now they are spending huge money hunting Japanese whaling fleets, which is a good cause. They're a dinosaur of the green movement caught up in expensive activist ventures that prevent them from being relevant in green technology. People already in the industry are doing more than Greenpeace could ever accomplish. They do it for headlines because their egos compell them to try to sound relevant and modern, but when I read Greenpeace I think "whaling, seals, nuclear power." They're trapped in the 70s and way behind the times in IT.

Obviously you don't get the target market for this. Who is going to buy a super-portable notebook only to have to attach it to a card reader, hub, or other things? I do see the lack of optical drive as a handicap, but for me, once I've finished converting all my DVDs to ATV format I can view them on the ATV or on a notebook (MB Air included).
Oh, and I believe before adding all those things you had a bigger footprint than a 12" PowerBook.

Not if you like watching movies while you travel. Sounds like the next step for Apple is building a thinner DVD.
Or perhaps this is another Jobs attempt to eliminate physical property like CDS, DVDs in favor of digital content purchased directly from iTunes.
Whatever. That thing's beautiful. More pictures here:

I am not comparing Apple to Exxon-Mobile as destroyers of the environment. Apple is far less destructive than Exxon-Mobile ever was, but to claim that a computer and consumer electronics corporation is environmentally friendly is absurd. They are environmentally unfriendly, and the new Macbook Air sales will cause more environmental destruction than repair. Let's all just see it for what it is: super-consumerism.
And while you're right, basically, that all consumerism is damaging to the environment in some way (as is existing as a human being). But if someone's going to buy something anyway, it's better that it be as environmentally friendly as possible. So, pressure is good, but also kudos for a job well done. Apple deserves some kudos for this one!

Steve didn't say what you are claiming he said. Typical green attitude! Misrepresent the facts to fit your doom and gloom scenario.
Steve explained some of the ways in which the Air is environmentally friendly--aluminum case, lack of arsenic in the display, minimal packaging, etc. He didn't say that it was an environmentally harmless device as you suggest he claimed. Please get off your soapbox and take it somewhere more appropriate.
I, for one, don't care about EXXON-MOBIL!!! Get on topic or get out of here!!!
Your diatribes are too long and politically charged for this topic and forum.
