Hi
Discuss away though I wouldn't have the slightest of what about. I agree that Apple could have offered it free and users would have been happier but there's no reason they had to. I didn't mean to suggest there aren't reasons for whatever opinion you may have but I just don't see anything other than an open and shut case.

Even though my purchase and installation of the upgrade didn't go smoothly at first, via iTunes, I do think it's worth the extra $20. Everyone who has purchased the iPod touch has done so for it's "cool factor" to some extent, and we all know that, sure, we could wait 3 more months, 6 months, a year -- but we wanted it for it's cool design, the "wow" factor (which, believe me, I get every time I pull out the device -- even from people who already have an iPhone!) as well as its functionality. I mean, come on, it's only $20. I like the good design, and think Apple deserves the extra money!

Please help! I have purchased & downloaded & synced my Ipod Touch with the 1.1.3 software upgrade.
I've read thru 2 hours of blog posts and can't find anywhere how I can now sync my Outlook NOTES with my new Ipod Touch NOTES section. PLEASE HELP!!
I read one post that hoped for an "easier way to sync notes" which must mean that there is a way to do it.
Can anyone walk me thru it? Would TRULY appreciate it. Thanks again.

Best ~

TAllen, you just dropped $600 to $800 on TWO (2) iPod Touchs for your kiddies and are now griping about another $40? Your kids should be totally stoked they got an Adult Electronic Device/Toy to play with while all their friends just have 2 dimensional iPods. (Or are they THAT spoiled? ;-)

I'm just a little surprised you didn't just get them iPhones? Don't you love your children???

Like you ended with, you aren't too worried about it but obviously bent out of shape enough in the first place to have bothered to post.

The kids should be totally stoked daddy is giving them some real Grown Up Electronics instead of the mere iPods their classmates have. Those kids must have parents who don't love them as much! ;-)

Surprised you didn't just get them iPhones. Anyway, you had to be peeved enough to post in the 1st place.

Me? I wish the new apps were "free" also, but that's life. I was happy enough to get the iPt as it was for what I paid for it a couple of months ago. I coulda waited. But I didn't. That's life.

I guess I should count myself lucky. MacMall is selling the "old" iPod Touches for $258/$358 vice the regular price for the new versions. That means even with the $20 price for the software I still save about $20 over the price of the new one. Sometimes, it pays to be a late adopter. ;-D

HALO9X:

You could be in for an even better deal.

I thought I read somewhere that if you bought the "old" iPod Touch after some date in January then you were entitled to the $20 upgrade for free - so you would really be getting a good deal versus MacMall's price on a "new" one with the upgrade installed.

How you prove your "late" purchase and where you get the apps from in that case I do not know, but surely someone on this board will know if I am right and how you make it happen.

Good luck - me, I'm gonna hold out for a few more months and see it they up the memory to 32GB for the iPod Touch

Park_UK,
Thanks for the info. We'll see how that works out. It may be that the 16Gb may become 2nd fiddle to a 32Gb but I'm not sure memory prices will allow that and keep the high end price @ $399. However, that would be great. Considering how much I will use it, 8Gb should be more than enough for me. Most of the PDA's still have a 32Mb memory limitation and cost nearly double what the Touch costs and without Wi-Fi at that! That's what the Touch is in reality with the new apps, a really neat PDA that does much more than either an audio/video player or PDA by themselves. The iPhone is a neat idea but the monthly costs are a show stopper. I use a pay-as-you-go cell that does a good job meeting my needs. That's where the Touch can shine with these new apps.
It was the addition of the new apps that finally made the Touch make sense vice the iPod Nano which I had been considering. Its also limited to 8Gb but less.
Anyway, thanks. I hope you get that 32Gb.

Here's an update on my iPod Touch. I bought the 8GB version for $258 @ MacMall. The Software update 1.1.3 was free but the Apps cost me $20.00 which brought my total to $278 vice the new version of the same product for $299.00, so I saved $21.00 by going with the close out. $20 for the Apps is reasonable because the programmers need to be paid for their efforts and Apple is a company which is supposed to make a profit. So quit complaining and get the Apps if you need them. I don't hear anyone complaining when Apple does give away something like all those updates that regularly occur for OS X or QuickTime or whatever. Microsoft used to charge for such updates. Looked at another way there were 5 apps which works to $5 an app. Still not bad. Not only that but they work and actually make the iPod Touch a viable PDA. Maybe they should have been there from the beginning or maybe Apple just woke up and realized what they had, the best PDA on the market!

I use my touch just like a mini-laptop on the road. If you have WiFi access at your hotel room, it's amazingly awesome and takes up almost no room at all. I check email, send email, map out my travel routes (with the map app that comes with the new update), watch movies (I have about 10 feature length movies on it), photos, etc. You can log appointments, check the weather for multiple cities at the slide of a finger...Photos that are uploaded from your home Mac with iPhoto (and .Mac) are displayed in Safari on your touch in a special format just for touch...great design. Sure, it's not a phone, but I pay no monthly fees to simply use the best PDA on the market. I no longer need my laptop on the road.

This recent $20 update MAKES the iPod touch.

You are SO right. I can spend a couple of hours on it in a motel room without any problem in spite of the small size. I do find it hard to type long e-mail responses and so keep the typing to a minimum. But it's just a very handy little device for keeping track of all of my e-mail in four different accounts and being able to surf to my favorite sites.

It's an amazing little device and although it's not perfect, it's about as close to perfect as anything I own.

Hi
I feel the typing issue in Mail could be easily solved by Apple allowing horizontal or vertical keyboard use globally ( in all applications ).

On top of that, copy / paste would be the only other feature I want.

Personally speaking, I am outraged that Apple is charging early buyers of the iPod Touch $20 for a system update that ought to be free.

While I understand Apple's decision to charge money for the new applications the new $20 "application pack" also includes a SYSTEM UPDATE in the form of the home page editing, web clips, and lyrics features. All of these are updates to the currently existing iPod Touch software and NOT new applications, which means that they ought to be free to all users of the iPod Touch.

Adding insult to injury these applications are all hidden in the 1.1.3 system update, a whopping 104.4mb file that all users must download if they want to fix bugs in the system. These applications can only be used when you pay Apple $20 to "unlock" them, but even if you decide not to buy them they stay on your iPod taking up precious space that could be used for songs, videos, or photos.

Apple is normally wonderful when it comes to providing system support and updates, but having them shaft early adopters and loyal fans like this is offensive and shows that Apple has absolutely no regard for the iPod Touch community.
