Great, an OS for a dead architecture... that's going to go places!

I think you missed the part where I said "among other platforms." It doesn't just work on PowerPC-based Macs. It works on other devices that utilize the Power architecture, including the PS3 and other IBM Cell-based systems.

For people who have some PPC gear taking up closet space, this is a welcome advance in the linux lineup. Yeah, it's going places. Ubuntu quit actively releasing their version for PPC (though there is a group trying to keep that distro alive) so having a fully supported OS for PPC is indeed going places for people wanting to set up a Linux 'box' on some nicely designed and reliable older Mac gear.
Want to give away an old Mac without violating your user agreement on copies of OS X? Put Linux on the machine and they'll have something they can work on and do it for free.

Why do we always get these sorts of scathing comments regarding YDL? I don't use it but I would have thought it'd be useful to people who cannot just throw away their old Macs on a whim and are not tied to OSX-only applications.
Terra Soft also deal in HPC so think about those sites with PowerPC clusters (big or small/Mac mini or XServe) who could migrate from OSX to Linux.
Besides, it's not the only "Power" family that they are targeting - the same investment is allowing them to support IBM P-series hardware and Playstation 3s.

What violates the user agreement with OS X going with the Mac someone is giving away or selling? The original OS license is for that particular Mac. Any boxed version of OS X is an upgrade. They can't possibly tell anyone they can give, or sell, the Mac to someone and not let them have the OS that's on it. When one buys a Mac, they buy a license for the OS at the same time.

YDL's antipathy towards Intel is well-known. They made it very clear on their website last time I was there. Quite understandable, as long as they don't care about the extra revenue it could generate. It's their choice. And a lot of work no doubt. They took forever and a day to update YDL for G5s. I was thinking about putting it on my G5 as an alternative OS to learn something about Linux, but it took so long for them to port it that I lost interest.

When you buy a computer with an installed OS, you've purchased the license for that machine to use that copy of the OS only. If you buy a boxed version later and install it, that license is supposed to be for one machine (unless you've bought the family pack) and should you give away the machine or sell the machine, either the original OS disk needs to go with the machine AND the machine needs to be reverted back to that version OR you need to include the updated OS disk with the machine.

Not doing so violates the user agreement you clicked through.
