I noticed that your Dock does not have the 3D "glass" appearance. Even after installing the 10.5.2 update, I saw no option to use a flat dock when it is at the bottom of the screen.
You're not supposed to pay attention to the Dock itself; just the menus ;)
But on a serious note, that was my fault; I've been using the modified Dock appearance, which I wrote about last fall:

I forgot to change the Dock back to its default appearance before taking that screenshot.

Welcome improvements. Nice article. Although I'd say that a white menu bar increases contrast, which improves legibilitya??which is especially important in light of the incredible shrinking menu bar phenomenon we are now witnessing as screen resolution continues to increase in the absence of resolution-independent screenfonts. I recently set up my first 17-inch MacBook Pro with the high-rez screen and couldn't help thinking that things are gonna get ridiculous if the resolution gets any higher with the current rasternzing technology.

What happened to the Apple defenders who dismissed the criticisms and called those people whiners?
Most people who dismissed the criticisms did so because they were over the top. Not upgrading to Leopard or downgrading to Tiger because the menu bar was translucent is pretty nuts. The list vs. stack issue was always a more real issue in my opinion.
While I don't find the list view very useful and I do find stacks useful, I hadn't realized how much I wanted to be able to switch between Display As: Folder instead of Stack in some cases. That is very welcome and comes as a complete surprise to me.
I love the stack feature in some cases--the downloads folder is still one of the most useful features in Leopard as a stack--I use it constantly. But I do understand why people were upset that a feature that they relied on and were actively using was no longer available. The fact that Apple put that feature back in and improved it in the process is why Apple is not like Microsoft.
