I was hoping for an update to Time Machine and/or the Airport Utility that would allow for backing up to external drives (seeing as it was Apple's own marketing that got me to buy an AEBS in the first place before they yanked the marketing that promised the ability). Alas, that update has not happened and I do not see my external hard drive attached to my AEBS.

Boy talk about a screwed up UI. In listening to a vocal minority afraid of change Apple abandoned a unified GUI and now we have a completely unappealing part translucent, part glaring, eye squinting, needing sunglasses to see drop down circa 2002 menus.

Apart from Mac OS 8/9, which had greyish menus, every other version of the Mac OS has had brighter-white menus than 10.5.2. So I guess I'm not understanding what's so bad about this improved -- as in, "I can see menu items clearly because they're no longer marred by the show-through of what's behind them" -- menu appearance ;)

In the last few months there has been much written on how to get rid of the translucency. It is unfortunate that none of these nut cases will figure out how to bring it back to the vast majority that understood the direction Apple was taking it user interface.

Serious question: What was this "direction"? The only thing I saw was a crazy UI that, depending on your choice of Desktop picture, led to a menu bar that was at best nicely tinted and at worst nearly unusable.

That said, if you really want to get the previous behavior back, you can use the same workarounds people were using to get rid of the semi-transparency to get that transparency back.

I would hardly call the return of folder lists to the dock an improvement over the 10.4 implementation. Previously in 10.4 symbolic links were followed in the traversal, however, in 10.5.2 with Stacks you cannot go any further when you reach a linked folder.

Ah, that's a very good point; I hadn't noticed that. So I guess we're at about the same level of functionality now -- we can finally sort Dock menus, but we lose the obvious functionality of aliases in those menus. Dang.

This is all very well, but frankly rather trivial. What about writing to NTFS disks and all the SMB troubles -- do I have to buy Dave again? If there are third-party solutions to this VERY important problem (which gives the lie to Apple's claims of effortless compatibility) why is it taking so long for Apple to fix them? Perhaps because they are too busy futzing with eye-candy...

"Apple listens to users..." is a little too ebullient for me. ;-)

How about an express card slot for the MacBook? That's a criticism in just about every review. A lot of folks have talked over the mid-tower. Where's that one? How about an e-sata port for the mini? Ok, I'm the only one on that. How about an unlocked/jailbreak iPhone? That's been mentioned. Oh, you mean software? iMovie '08 is what the people wanted?

The translucent dock works great for me. I have a burning sunrise from my backporch as a desktop and it lights up the dock. I'm glad Apple listens. It gives us something to talk about instead of whining. :-)

Well, that was just the headline. In the article itself, it clearly says "sometimes" ;)

Agreed on both counts!

The current 10.5.2 implementation of List Folder choices for Dock folders not allowing the traversal through folder aliases is a poor substitute for Tiger's Docked folders.

Yeah, but not to all of us. Several of us have been having serious issues with graphics since Leopard's release and this latest update does not address any of those issues (at least not for me). These areas are Time Machine, Random Screen Flashes, Graphics Corruption, ATI Radeon Cards and 30" Cinema Displays and other issues.

I was holding out hope that this would fix these problems, but true to their nature Apple leaves older (2005 PowerMac G5) users in the dust. Just try giving a presentation when your screen is flashing red!

Apple listens to customers - but apperently customers seem to have the largest problems with cosmetics. I still do not understand why "smart"folders cannot be opened with the open/save dialog, and why saved searched cannot be adressed from the spotlight with e.g.
'saved:important AND kind:Python'.
That would be really nice, and not much has to be done to implement the latter feature. And the first, should have already been implemented with Tiger.

It is nice that Apple listens to obvious complaints. However, most complaints seem to be cosmetically, and the issues adressed are also mostly cosmetic changes.

What I do not understand is why "smart"folders still cannot be opened withit the open/save dialog box. Also if they just implemented the keyword saved: in spotlight, which does work in open/save dialogs. Then one could simple use the style

saved:ProjectPDF AND name:profile

that would really be nice and simple to implement.

Those headline writers should read the story. Clearly the headline should be,

"Frakes demands menu change, Apple sets table" ;-) or

"Frakes changes Jobs" ;-)

We need to get those headline writers in the right mood to attract readers. :-) like

Bit blip blast, Mistake mars menu ;-)

I think it's also important to note that 10.5.2's 'Stacks' implementation retains its spring-loaded functionality even in List view. This was something I've wanted since 10.0 and was happy to see that Apple added in 10.5. Making it work in a Tiger-like List-view is icing on the cake.

Logitech S530 Laser Keyboard/Mouse Combo not working after 10.5.2. Did anyone else experience this? I tried using the current LCC (Logitech Control Centre) v2.40 and still nothing. It can't find the keyboard and mouse any longer...
